CARPENTER I

Department: School Plants

Pay Grade: U108

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: Starting $21.65 - To $35.89

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position performs intermediate, semi skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, installation, and construction of wooden and related structures in school buildings. Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Installs and maintains windows, locks, flooring, tile, and a variety of wooden structures.

  • Assists in layout of work and material preparation.

  • Assists in performance of carpentry work involving maintenance, repairs, or alterations.

  • Repairs and replaces doors, locks, windows, window frames, and sashes as directed.

  • Makes and repairs screens. 

  • Removes and installs ceramic tile.

  • Repairs partitions and covers with drywall or paneling.

  • Installs cover base molding. 

  • Removes and installs carpeting.

  • Performs standard masonry functions (e.g., builds forms, finishes new concrete, etc.).

  • Operates all necessary woodworking machinery.

  • Repairs stage curtain hardware and cable.

  • Installs window blinds. 

  • Fabricates and installs steps and ramps.

  • Assists in the installation of ceramic tile floors, walls, and vinyl sheet goods.

  • Assists in performing minor roof repairs as needed.

  • Resurfaces countertops. 

  • Repairs and replaces door locks.

  • Installs chalkboards and bulletin boards.

  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or its equivalent.

  • One year of experience in carpentry work.

  • Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the common practices, tools, terminology and safety precautions of the carpentry trade. 

  • Knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials. 

  • Knowledge of plumbing and electric methods, tools and procedures. 

  • Skill in the use of carpentry tools and woodworking equipment. 

  • Ability to work from sketches, drawings, plans or specifications. 

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions. 

  • Ability to estimate needed materials and time required for various jobs. 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.

  • This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. 

  • Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms length, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
