In-House Counsel will be responsible for providing legal advice and developing strategies responsible for driving Casualty and Accident Benefit files to timely resolution. This role will work with claims adjusters, clients and Team Leaders/Director, Legal.
In-House Counsel will be responsible for timely resolution of claims from initial assignment, completion of examinations for discovery, research, prepare for and attend private mediations, prepare for and attend pre-trials, conduct trials and arbitrations as well as settlement. Counsel will provide proactive insight and legal guidance by identifying opportunities for technical excellence.
What will you do?
Provide legal advice and insight
- Carry a case load of 50+ files of a complexity commensurate with years of experience.
- Have end-to-end file handling including but not limited to examinations for discovery, reporting, mediations, motions, arbitrations, trials and appeals.
- Follow and meet defined litigation protocols and key results.
- Drive timely and efficient outcomes.
Legal Compliance
- Ensure legal compliance by following national, provincial and municipal laws/by-laws and regulations and internal control requirements.
- Ensure quality writing for each file.
- Advise and educate clients to understand Ontario’s legal litigation landscape.
Process Improvement
- Provide proactive insights and legal guidance by identifying opportunities for technical excellence.
- Develop and deliver targeted training to the organization.
- Contribute to the team effort by accomplishing results and participating in projects as needed.
Partnering with Legal Support Staff
- Foster positive working relationship with support staff.
- Appropriately direct support staff regarding tasks for file management.
What will you need to succeed?
- Undergraduate degree, J.D. or LL.B. and called to the bar in Ontario.
- Minimum of 3-8 years of litigation experience.
- Experience handling claims disputes through litigation, mediation and trials (contested motions and arbitrations, arbitrations, trials and appeals).
- Legal research skills and proficiency with digital legal research resources.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent judgment.
- Work in a collaborative team environment

The expected base salary range for this position is $97,500 - $147,500. Depending on your relevant experience, skills, qualifications, market conditions and business needs, base compensation may vary. You have the potential to earn more through Gore Mutual’s discretionary bonus program which gives you an opportunity to increase your total compensation, provided the business meets its performance targets and you meet your individual goals.
