Job Title: Electric & Telecommunications Construction
Department: Electric
Reports To: Electric Construction Supervisor
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Wage Scale Designation: WG-13
General Statement of Duties
Under the supervision of the Electric Construction Supervisor, this position is responsible for performing telecommunication and/or electrical construction work. Install, maintain, and repair cable and wire facilities according to specifications under supervision. Support the mission statement of Brookings Municipal Utilities.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
- Install underground and aerial electric cables, fiber-optic cable wires, and assist with the cutover of new cables and wires.
- Receives daily work assignments, guidance, and technical direction from the department foreman while maintaining a direct reporting relationship to the Electric Construction Supervisor.
- Install non-energized terminals, poles, pedestals, and equipment pads & vaults associated with cable and equipment installation.
- Assist technicians with the installation and maintenance of equipment and wire as needed.
- Performs cable maintenance and cable splicing on non-energized secondary cable.
- Operate and maintain equipment used in the construction of telephone and electrical utility systems.
- Utilize company designated devices and software platforms to access utility and telephone information and accurately record time worked, document work performed, materials used and maintain records.
- Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of assigned vehicle.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- Graduation from a technical institute with education in electronics or the equivalent thereof or an acceptable combination of high school education and experience and training as a telephone and/or electrical groundman or telephone and/or electrical construction.
- Knowledge of or the ability to learn telephone and electric construction practices.
- Knowledge of electrical theory, mechanical application, and current safety practices in the industry.
- Ability to operate equipment used in the construction of utility systems.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
- Adhere to all Brookings Municipal Utilities policies and procedures, including safety policies and recognized industry standards.
- Ability to use company-designated devices for record management, including entering, retrieving, and updating operational, maintenance, and service information.
Language Skills
- Ability to read and comprehend simple to complex instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
- Ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally.
Certification, Testing and Examination
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Possession or the ability to obtain a South Dakota Class A CDL with air breaks license within 180 days of hire.
- Other such testing as deemed necessary by Brookings Municipal Utilities / Swiftel.

- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.
- Excellent hand/eye coordination is required for this position.
- Employee is occasionally required to lift, carry, and push/pull up to 70lbs.
