About the Department

The Parks Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks involved in the care, maintenance, and repair of City parks, athletic fields, buildings, and related facilities. Work includes mowing and landscaping, equipment operation, facility cleaning, trash removal, and general upkeep to ensure safe, attractive, and well-maintained public spaces for residents and visitors.

Position Duties

• Clean and maintain park equipment, buildings, grounds, and other City facilities to ensure a safe and welcoming environment.
• Collect and dispose of trash and litter daily to maintain park cleanliness and safety.
• Operate light- and medium-duty equipment, including trucks, mowers, tractors, weed trimmers, and various hand tools.
• Perform turf and landscape maintenance, including mowing, trimming, raking, hoeing, mulching, aerating, seeding, sodding, watering, and fertilizing.
• Prune trees and shrubs and maintain landscaped areas.
• Conduct general maintenance, repair, and painting of park shelters, restrooms, picnic tables, benches, and other City structures and equipment.
• Assist with the repair, painting, and installation of playground equipment.
• Maintain City athletic fields daily to ensure safe, high-quality playing conditions for users.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

This position requires no previous work experience. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid Iowa driver’s license. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer physical examination, drug screen, and background check.

Position requires heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force constantly. Some climbing, pulling, kneeling, stooping, crawling, crouching, standing, reaching, hearing, pushing, walking, balancing, lifting, grasping, talking and repetitive motion is also required on a regular basis. Visual perception range includes working at distances close to the eyes, operating machines at or within arm’s reach, and operating mobile equipment.  

Must be able to use logical or scientific thinking to solve problems using several abstract and concrete variables. Position requires exposure to outside environmental conditions and inside environmental conditions, with protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, oils, or cutting fluids. Required to wear a respirator for some job duties.
