The Middle School POMS Coach is responsible for leading, developing, and managing the school’s POMS (dance) team. This role includes choreography, skill development, game/event performances, competition preparation, and fostering a positive, disciplined, and team-oriented environment for student-athletes.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, choreograph, and teach dance routines for games, pep rallies, competitions, and school events
- Schedule and lead regular practices, including conditioning and technique training
- Supervise students during practices, performances, travel, and competitions
- Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and accountability among team members
- Coordinate tryouts, including judging, selection, and feedback
- Ensure all routines and music meet school and district guidelines
- Maintain communication with school administration, parents, and athletic departments
- Organize uniforms, props, music, and other team-related logistics
- Monitor academic progress and eligibility of team members
- Ensure compliance with school policies and any applicable athletic association rules
- Manage team budget, fundraising efforts, and program needs
- Provide a safe environment and enforce proper technique to prevent injuries
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in dance (POMS, pom, jazz, hip-hop, or similar styles)
- Previous coaching, teaching, or leadership experience with students
- Strong knowledge of choreography, formations, and performance techniques
- Ability to manage and motivate a team in a structured environment
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Availability for after-school practices, evenings, weekends, and travel
Preferred
- Prior POMS or dance team coaching experience
- Background in competitive dance
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Experience with fundraising and program coordination
- Knowledge of rules/regulations for high school athletics or dance competitions
Physical Requirements
- Ability to demonstrate dance techniques and routines
- Stand, move, and actively participate during practices and performances
- Lift and carry equipment or props as needed
Work Environment
- School gymnasiums, auditoriums, and outdoor venues
- Evening and weekend commitments required
- Travel for competitions and events
