The Director of Nursing is a coach and supervisor for all employees of the nursing department.

Primary Accountabilities:

The Director of Nursing plans, organizes and directs the overall delivery of nursing services in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and guidelines to enable each resident to attain or maintain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being. The Director of Nursing is a coach and supervisor for all employees of the nursing department. 

 

Major Duties:

 

·      Champions the Graceful Living program by helping create an environment where elders’ lives are purposeful not passive, staff are motivated by the person not the process and the home is intentional not institutional  

·      Develops good relationships with elders, elder’s families, and team members

·      Provides support and coaching to help team members develop and grow 

·      Implements nursing policies and procedures that conform to the current standards of nursing practice and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws and regulations

·      Participates in all admissions decisions and ensures a pre-admission assessment is completed with all necessary information  

·      Oversees the nursing schedule to assure elder needs are met and staffing ratios meet regulatory and budgetary standards 

·      Adheres to the departmental operating budget and adjusts per diems to ensure alignment with budget as census fluctuates

·      Participates in daily and weekly meetings to discuss elder status, census changes, personnel, risk management and grievances 

·      Collaborates directly with elders, families, medical professionals, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary team members, to coordinate care and services by overseeing the development of care plans

·      Reviews daily reports to monitor and ensure timely and effective response to significant changes in condition, falls, unexplained injuries, behavioral episodes, medication errors, transfers, and discharges 

·      Reviews, investigates and resolves customer grievances in cooperation with the Administrator and ensures allegations of potential abuse, neglect, or exploitation are immediately reported to the administrator and investigated following policy 

·      Establishes, implements, and monitors the Antibiotic Stewardship Program and Infection Control program and reviews the infection control surveillance reports to identify trends and to develop effective actions  

·      Is an active member of the Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) team.  

·      Coordinates on-going QAPI activities for nursing services to monitor nursing compliance with standards and regulatory requirements through rounds, interviews, and record reviews. Reports findings to QAPI committee

·      Participates in the Survey Readiness Process and with preparation of the Plan of Correction response to a state inspection 

·      Coordinates and/or supervises the Staff Development process to implement competency skills evaluations with each nursing staff member to ensure sufficient knowledge and skills to provide high quality care

 

Major Duties Continued: 

 

·      Promotes compliance with accident prevention and safe work practices to prevent employee injury and illness and control worker’s compensation costs  

·      Supervises all department employees including: hiring, orienting, training, conducting performance evaluations, and providing counseling and discipline; coordinating and approving time off; and directing and managing the workflow of the department, all within community standards and guidelines 

·      Ensures that all resident rights are protected and enforced

·      Monitors usage of supplies and equipment and plans for long-range equipment replacement

·      Participates in relationship building with discharge planners and other community organizations to meet community established occupancy goals. Promotes a positive image.

·      Acts in an administrative capacity in the absence of the administrator. 

 

 

Required Qualifications: 

·      Must possess a current Kansas license as Registered Nurse and have graduated from an accredited school of nursing  

·      Two years of professional nursing experience in the long-term care setting is required 

·      A minimum of two years experience in nursing administration or a comparable management position  

·      Must possess and demonstrate a high degree of leadership, organizational ability, and communication skills 

·      Knowledge of Long-Term Care management, policies, budgeting, personnel management, and census development is required  

·      Current CPR certification

·      Knowledge of current federal and state laws and regulations that apply to long-term care 

·      Strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize responsibilities 

·      Ability to define problems, collect data, draw valid conclusions, and establish corrective action plans 

·      Must have a phone to be able to be respond to emergency situations 

 

Physical Demands: 

·      Ability to lift, pull, or push up to 25lbs 

·      Be able to stoop, bend, stand, and sit throughout the day 

·      Occasional travel to meetings

·      Must be able to work overtime and on an “on-call” basis 

·      May work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays as needed

 

Work Environment: 

·      Professional environment primarily indoors in a climate-controlled setting

·      Interaction with older adults with varying levels of ability 

·      Team environment 

·      Continuous exposure to elders who are ill, confused, irritable

·      Possible exposure to infections, diseases, and bloodborne pathogens
