Industrial Operator - JD


This is a general job opening under which all applications will be reviewed by hiring managers and supervisors. Interviews will be conducted based on business needs, and the specific position for which a candidate may be interviewed will be determined following the interview process. Candidates may indicate their areas of interest in the questionnaire or during the interview.


Department: Industrial Operations (MCL / CPL / Slitter / Material Handling)

Reports to: Shift Supervisor / Area Manager

Location: Shreveport Plant

Employment type: Fulltime; 12-hr shift work (rotating/weekends as required)


Position Summary


The Industrial Operator is responsible for safe, efficient, and highquality operation of production lines and materialhandling activities across MCL, CPL, Slitter, and warehouse/shipping areas. Operators follow all Operating Procedures (SOPs), Quality Management System (QMS) practices, and PPE requirements, maintain housekeeping, and ensure continuous line flow and correct data capture. All line operators carry a 2way radio and remain available during the scheduled shift.


Core Responsibilities (may not apply to all)


  • Safety & Compliance: Work strictly under safe-work practices, PPE, LOTO and departmental safety standards; participate in required training and report incidents/abnormalities immediately. 
  • Quality & QMS: Operate under QMS; perform visual/dimensional checks per procedures; document results and escalate nonconformities.
  • Production Operation: Start-up/shut down equipment per SOPs; monitor controls, parameters, and product specs; support changeovers and threading as applicable.
  • Data & Traceability: Record production, downtime, scrap, and coil/product disposition in MES/SAP or designated systems. 
  • Material Handling: Safely move, stage, load/unload coils and finished goods using forklifts and overhead cranes; tag/retag and scan for traceability.
  • Housekeeping & 5S: Keep work areas clean and orderly; support 5S initiatives.
  • Preventive Maintenance Support: Perform basic PM tasks and assist maintenance during troubleshooting and repairs; promptly report equipment issues.
  • Shift Communication: Maintain passdowns and radio communication; support crosstraining and assist other areas during downtime as required.



Assignment Tracks (may be assigned to one or more)

 

A) MCL Operator 


  • Entry: Unpack and inspect feed coils; perform coil prep and welding; run cleaner section (titrations, parameters) and ensure accurate MES dispositions.
  • Exit / Exit Inspector: Inspect surface, gauge, width, shape; perform OD banding and coil disposition; document results in SAP; support startups and lab sampling.
  • Process: Monitor/optimize furnace (temperatures, atmosphere, dew point), air knives and coating weight control, tension leveler/skin pass as applicable; coordinate sections for line continuity. 
  • Lab Exit: Execute quality tests (mechanical properties, coating weights, pretreatment films); maintain calibrations and records.
  • Process Utility: Assist threading, roll changes, pot gear/air knife work, daytanks and inductions; handle zinc/alloy feed and SAP consumptions.


B) CPL Operator (Entry / Exit / Coaters / Scales / Packaging / Paint / Roll Grinding)


  • Entry & Exit Inspector: Feed line, check raw material, follow schedule & specs; visually inspect and communicate adjustments; record in production systems.
  • Primer & Finish Coater: Prepare correct paints (numeric codes), execute roll changes with maintenance support, keep tools compliant, and log accurately.
  • Scales & Packaging: Weigh/verify, package to customer requirements, and record accurate comments; maintain orderly work area.
  • Paint Receiving: Unload/receive/tag paints & chemicals; maintain FIFO, inventory scans, waste drum labeling/compacting, and EH&S support.
  • Roll Grinding Operator: Resurface applicator rolls (MCL/CPL), manage diameters/specs, inspect journals/bearings, maintain machine and participate in PMs.


C) Slitter Operator / Slitter Helper


  • Slitter Operator: Feed MES/SAP with operational data; verify schedule/specs; perform machine setup and adjustments; monitor raw material and stop outofspec processing.
  • Slitter Helper: Stage material; load/unload; package and remove product; operate cranes/forklifts; ensure correct tagging; assist setups; weigh/verify material.


D) Material Handler (Shipping / Warehouse / CPL Exit / Floater / Packaging Machine / Team Leader)


  • General MHD: Comply with SOPs and MHD DDP; complete equipment inspections; housekeeping & 5S; tagging/retagging; maintain certifications; perform rail movements and passdown reports. 
  • Shipping / Warehouse / CPL Exit: Safely load/unload using forklift/overhead crane; scan/mark/stage loads; remove coils from CPL exit; manage holdlist movements and radiation detection.
  • Floater / Team Leader: Verify coil IDs and SAP locations; displace rejected inventory; ensure equipment inspections; manage boxcar/transverse loads; lead task delegation, inventory checks, and discrepancy documentation.
  • Packaging Machine Operator: Load/unload to wrapping machine; scan accurately; report packaging performance and issues; maintain area.






Competencies


  • Safety focus and adherence to procedures and PPE.
  • Basic Metallurgical Processes understanding for steel processing.
  • QMS knowledge and disciplined documentation.
  • SAP literacy for scanning, dispositions, and production entries.
  • Teamwork & communication (radio use, passdowns); leadership when assigned (Team Lead/Floater). 
  • Continuous improvement mindset and housekeeping/5S discipline.



Qualifications


  • Education: Secondary/High School or Technical School.
  • Experience: 1–2 years in industrial, steel, metalworking, logistics, maintenance, or compatible processes. 
  • Certifications (preferred/required by assignment): Forklift and Overhead Crane; Shuttle Wagon/Mule for rail movements; maintain current certifications.
  • Languages: English.



Physical & Working Conditions


  • Industrial environment with standing/walking, material handling, exposure to noise/heat, rotating shifts, overtime/weekends as needed.
  • Must wear required PPE and comply with all safety procedures; participate in required training and audits.



Success Measures


  • Safe work performance, follow attendance policy, nearmiss reporting, and 5S discipline.
  • Product quality within specification and accurate data recording.
  • Throughput, changeover effectiveness, and minimal unplanned downtime via proper operation and timely escalation.
