Job Description

Job Title: Safety Specialist Intern

The Safety Specialist Intern will gain hands-on experience in construction and industrial safety by working alongside Safety Specialists, the Safety Manager, and the Safety Director. This internship provides exposure to safety practices across heavy civil construction operations including asphalt paving, grading, concrete work, aggregate/quarry operations, and asphalt plant operations. The intern will assist in promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and supporting both field and plant safety initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:
Field Safety (Asphalt, Grading & Concrete Operations):
•    Shadow Safety Specialists on active jobsites to observe and learn safety practices 
•    Assist with jobsite safety inspections, hazard identification, and risk assessments 
•    Support implementation of company safety policies and OSHA regulations 
•    Participate in daily safety meetings (toolbox talks) and job hazard analyses (JHAs) 
•    Observe and assist in incident investigations and near-miss reporting 
•    Monitor proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) 

Aggregate / Quarry Safety:
•    Shadow safety practices within aggregate and quarry operations 
•    Learn about blasting safety protocols, material handling, and heavy equipment hazards 
•    Assist with quarry inspections, hazard assessments, and compliance monitoring 
•    Observe dust control, traffic flow, and site access safety procedures 
•    Gain exposure to MSHA regulations and how they differ from OSHA requirements 

Asphalt Plant Safety:
•    Shadow plant safety practices and procedures in an asphalt production environment 
•    Assist with plant inspections, safety audits, and compliance checks 
•    Learn about confined space entry, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and equipment safety procedures 
•    Observe environmental and air quality safety controls 
•    Support documentation and reporting related to plant safety activities 

Safety Program Support:
•    Assist in maintaining safety records, logs, and documentation 
•    Help track training certifications and compliance requirements 
•    Support development and distribution of safety communications and materials 
•    Participate in safety training sessions and observe delivery methods 
•    Learn how safety data is collected, analyzed, and used to improve performance 

Leadership & Development Exposure:
•    Shadow the Safety Manager and Safety Director to gain insight into strategic safety planning 
•    Observe how safety programs are developed, implemented, and evaluated 
•    Participate in safety meetings, audits, and leadership discussions when appropriate 
•    Learn about regulatory compliance, company policies, and industry best practices 

Qualifications:
•    Currently pursuing a degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related field (preferred) 
•    Strong interest in construction, aggregate/quarry operations, and industrial safety 
•    Basic understanding of workplace safety principles (preferred but not required) 
•    Willingness to work in field, plant, and quarry environments 

Skills & Competencies:
•    Strong attention to detail and observation skills 
•    Effective communication and interpersonal skills 
•    Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
•    Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook) 
•    Ability to learn and apply safety standards and procedures 

Work Environment:
•    Combination of outdoor construction sites, quarry environments, and industrial plant settings 
•    Exposure to heavy equipment, blasting operations, noise, dust, heat, and varying weather conditions 
•    Requires standing, walking, and occasional lifting
