GENERAL PURPOSE
This position performs intermediate professional work advising, assisting and counseling students. Work is performed under general supervision.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Provides a confidential counseling environment.
Counsels with students individually and in small groups for specifically identified needs including personal, academic and vocational growth.
Consults with parents, school staff, other pupil personnel specialists and community agency personnel to help student experiencing problems.
Meets with students to provide information on curricular and extra-curricular alternatives and the career goals to which they may lead.
Assists students in making appropriate post-secondary or vocational choices.
Assists students and parents in the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
Provides orientation for new students.
Assists in identification, referral and appropriate placement of students with special needs.
Assists parents in monitoring academic progress of students. Provides appropriate feedback to teachers regarding needs of students.
Provides counseling for departing students: transfers and dropouts.
Assists with the coordination and interpretation of standardized testing.
Participates in curriculum development and serves on faculty committees.
Attends staff meetings, PSTA meetings, and department sponsored workshops.
Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a Master’s Degree in Guidance and School Counseling.
At least two years of counseling and guidance or teaching experience.
Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles, practices and procedures of school counseling.
Knowledge of community agencies available to serve and assist students.
Knowledge of casework methods and procedures.
Skill in conducting interviews and guidance sessions effectively.
Skill in analyzing attitudes and problems objectively.
Skill in counseling students and parents on sensitive problems.
Skill in communicating ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and administration.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
Work requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
