TITLE: Summer Day Camp Counselor

FUNCTION: Responsible for the organization, implementation, and evaluation of NISRA’s Summer Day Camp for individuals with disabilities ages 3-22.

REPORTS TO: Manager of Summer Day Camp and Outreach

FLSA: Non-exempt; hourly

SALARY: Starting at $15/HR


DAYS/HOURS:

June 15- July 30 Summer position only. 

Monday-Thursday 9:00 A.M.-3:30 P.M. 

Seven weeks of camp. Occasional Fridays, evenings or weekends are determined by need.


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be at least 16 years of age.

• Previous experience or possess the desire to work with individuals that have physical and/or mental disabilities.

• Must be able to successfully meet physical demands of this position as detailed out in this job description.

• Ability to effectively communicate with others in a recreational setting.

• Display a positive attitude, demonstrate motivation and enthusiasm.

• Possess problem solving skills and able to successfully follow instructions given by leadership.

• Able to provide oneself with personal and reliable transportation to and from NISRA programs.

• Must be able to work under stressful conditions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Adhere to NISRA’s safety policies, procedures and the NISRA Employee Handbook. Keep participants safe at all times.

• Actively participate by engaging and supervising participants with physical and/or mental disabilities and promoting independent skills.

• Assist with activities of daily living such as feeding, changing, toileting and transferring.

• Provide activity adaptations for participants as needed.

• Take initiative in helping the Program Leader with preparations such as setting up, greeting participants/parents/guardians, facilitate activity, etc.

• Complete behavior modification/redirection with participant in a positive manner.

• Attend to specific dietary restrictions of participants, following through with plans provided by families.

• Attend Orientation, annual Safety School and other training courses as scheduled and required.

• Maintain Handle with Care Level 1 certification.

• Complete required paperwork including, but not limited to, timesheets, safety forms, feedback, and accident/incident forms.

• Successfully demonstrate dependability, punctuality and flexibility.

• Consistently know the whereabouts of assigned participants at all times.

• Follow through on instructions given by Program Leader and/or family members for assigned individuals.

• Show respect to all individuals attending and working NISRA programs.

• Provide timely responses to all phone calls, Sling messages and emails.

• Proactively respond to situations and communicate any incidents timely to the appropriate Coordinator or Manager.

• Be aware of seizure plans or other medical information regarding the program participants.

• Assist in maintaining and completing inventory program for supplies and equipment.

• Successfully perform your required duties as a mandated reporter for the “Abuse and Neglected Child Reporting Act.”

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Summer Day Camp Counselor:

• Summer position only. Monday-Thursday 9:00 A.M.-3:30 P.M, for 7 weeks. Occasional Fridays, evenings or weekends are determined by need.

• Write participant notes daily to be sent home with parents/guardians.

• Assist with getting the participants in and out of the water and supervise them in the water during swim days.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

• Gather, load, transport and set-up equipment and supplies for activities

• Capable of lifting 50 pounds independently.

• Physically assist participants in wheelchairs by pushing, pulling, or providing stabilization on unknown terrain.

• Physically transfer participants from a wheelchair to chair, into and out of vehicles, from pool deck to pool, in washroom facilities, etc.

• Actively participate in programs along with participants.


WORKING CONDITIONS: The employee may be exposed to all types of weather conditions. Most activities are performed indoors; these conditions include lighting and temperature.
