Nutrition Coordinator (Head Start Programs)
Reports to: Nutrition Manager
SUMMARY: The Nutrition Coordinator primary responsibility is to assist Nutrition Manager in the operation of the Child Nutrition component of the Head Start/Early Head Start program in accordance with the Head Start Performance Standards, MS Childcare Licensure, DHA policy and procedures, and CACFP requirements. This position is responsible for the monitoring, data tracking, record keeping and reporting of the food service program. This position provides child, family nutritional education, community outreach and technical assistance to program staff to ensure high quality nutrition services are provided. The individual must demonstrate strong leadership in providing guidance, with the ability to work collaboratively with staff to deliver appropriate training and ongoing support as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Current ServSafe certification or able to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Complete course work and training in food, nutrition, or dietetics.
- Experience in child food service preparation and management desirable.
- Knowledge of CACFP requirements is also desirable.
- Effective oral and written communication skills commensurate with the responsibilities of the position are required
- Valid driver's license and vehicle insurance.
- Ability to pass all requirements of the Head Start guidance and state licensure.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Responsible for understanding and adhering to Head Start Performance Standards (HSPPS), CACFP, Caring for Our Children (CFOC), and Mississippi Childcare Licensing regulations.
- Monitor the delivery, preparation, and service of meals in accordance with established standards for nutrition, health, and sanitation.
- Conduct site visits to ensure kitchen and children’s eating areas are properly sanitized according to HSPPS, MS Childcare Licensure, and CACFP requirements.
- Maintain cost control, budget, and inventory systems in accordance with CACFP procedures, including accurate records of food production, service, attendance, and monthly meal documentation prior to submission to the Nutrition Manager for reimbursement.
- Review and reconcile daily attendance and meal counts and assist with CACFP monthly claims.
- Monitor classrooms to ensure family-style dining is appropriately implemented and Point of Service is accurately documented.
- Collaborate with Center Managers to plan nutritious activities.
- Collaborate with Center Managers and Cooks to ensure Individualized Health/Nutrition Care Plans related to nutrition concerns are accurately implemented.
- Provide mentoring, coaching, and technical assistance to Cooks and Cook Assistants on nutrition-related topics.
- With guidance, modify menus and recipes and support Center Managers and Cooks to ensure appropriate food preparation practices meet the developmental needs of infants and toddlers and the medical or dietary needs of children with disabilities or food allergies.
- Participate in required USDA quarterly monitoring, complete monitoring reports, and follow up on nutritional concerns.
- Provide assistance to Cooks in procuring food and supplies to ensure planned menus are followed based on enrollment numbers for children and program staff.
- Plan meals in advance to minimize substitutions; when substitutions are necessary, ensure foods of equivalent nutritional value are purchased and served with prior approval.
- Adhere to guidance from the Nutrition Manager to maintain sanitation, safety, food preparation, and storage standards in accordance with local and state health department regulations.
- Ensure proper care and maintenance of food service equipment; identify equipment needs and assist with purchasing as necessary.
- Cooperate with and participate in nutritional education activities for staff, parents, and children.
- Attend required workshops, staff meetings, parent meetings, training, and professional development activities as directed by the Nutrition Manager.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all child records, data, and program information.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
