Job Description

General Summary

Reporting to the Aquatics Director, the Summer Lifeguard is responsible for oversight and safety of the pool and pool deck areas, mitigating potential risks of injury for swimmers and guests. 

Must be available from June 1, 2026, until August 1, 2026, for variable hours Monday through Friday, approximately 10 – 15 hours per week.,

 Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise the pool and pool deck areas, including communicating with swimmers and athletes, to ensure the safe use of the pool;
  • Maintain constant and active surveillance of pool area by standing or sitting in an elevated platform chair, avoiding interpersonal conversations and/or personal distraction from electronic devices;
  • Maintain an appropriate and ready body position in the event you must enter the pool to rescue a swimmer, including wearing swimming attire and keeping a rescue tube within arm’s reach while on duty;
  • Collaborate with other lifeguards on duty, if necessary, by rotating guard stations every 15 minutes;
  • Manage the sound to ensure calls for help can be heard, including addressing loud music levels;
  • Supervise safe and appropriate use of pool areas, including the use of the 1-meter diving boards, sides of the pool, and starting blocks;
  • Other duties as assigned

 Job Specifications

  • Must be 16+ years of age
  • 3 months of lifeguard experience or learning preferred 
  • Must possess a current lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross or other similar agency.
  • Knowledge of First Aid and CPR required.
  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to understand hazards and follow safety procedures in swimming pool areas
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community

Physical Demands

Ability to sit for extended periods of time
Ability to stand and/or walk on a hard surface for eight hours or more
Ability to lift and/or move up to 200 lbs occasionally to remove a person from the water
Ability to stoop frequently
Ability to reach with hands and arms frequently.

 Working Conditions

Worker is continually subject to humidity and potentially slippery, wet surfaces
Worker is frequently exposed to pool chemical agents
