Position Summary:
The Part-Time Evening Long-Term Substitute Reading/Writing 3 Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality literacy instruction to adult learners in an Adult Basic Education (ABE) program. The teacher supports students in developing reading and writing skills necessary to achieve academic, career, and personal goals, including preparation for a high school equivalency credential.
This role serves a diverse population of adult learners, including multilingual students with varying educational backgrounds. The teacher promotes an inclusive, learner-centered classroom environment and implements evidence-based instructional practices aligned with ABE curriculum guidelines and CCRSAE standards.
The teacher also supports program operations through assessment, documentation, and collaboration with colleagues and program leadership
Essential Functions & Responsibilities

- Plan and deliver engaging, learner-centered reading and writing instruction aligned with ABE curriculum guidelines and CCRSAE standards.
- Provide explicit instruction in reading and writing strategies, including literacy skills across content areas.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, linguistic, and cultural needs of adult learners.
- Assess student learning regularly and use data to inform instruction and support student progress.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and document student progress in accordance with program and DESE requirements.
- Administer required assessments and complete related reporting tasks.
- Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student engagement and persistence.
- Collaborate with colleagues, counselors, and program administrators to support student success and program goals.
- Attend and actively participate in department meetings, professional development, and in-service trainings.
- Integrate technology effectively into instruction to enhance learning outcomes.
- Prepare and submit lesson plans in accordance with department expectations.
- Follow program policies and procedures, including those related to substitutes and instructional continuity.
- Performs other duties consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position as assigned.

Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
- Minimum of three (3) years of adult classroom teaching experience, including at least one full year teaching adult immigrants
- Demonstrated experience using learner-centered instructional approaches and integrated skills instruction
Preferred Qulaifications:
- Master’s degree in Education or Adult Literacy
- Massachusetts Teacher Certification
- BEST Plus and TABE-e Writing certification

Position Reports to: Director of SCALE or Designee
Terms of Employment
Work Period: March 2026 – June 2026
Schedule: 3 evenings per week
Location: SCALE
Hours: 9 instructional hours per week; 2 preparation hours per week
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Benefits: Not benefits eligible (part-time, grant-funded position)
Salary: In accordance with the SEU, Unit D collective bargaining agreement
