General Function:

To provide adapted physical education to students with disabilities who cannot participate without support in the general physical education classes, consistent with the student's Individualized Education Plan. Identifies student needs and applies a program consistent with identified needs, using appropriate teaching strategies, and assessing student progress.


Education/Training/Experience:

Minimum: Four-year degree and valid New Mexico Teaching License (or the ability to obtain such)

Preferred: Experience teaching adapted physical education.


Knowledge/Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrated general knowledge of curriculum and instruction. Demonstrated knowledge of various routine tasks, duties, and procedures, and the ability to follow specific instructions with little or no previous experience. Ability to exercise considerable and sound judgment to instruct students and manage their behavior. Willingness to improve competency by periodically participating in some form of professional growth and to remain current with the latest developments in the profession. Ability to deal with various ethnic groups. Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents. Must have skills in oral and written communication. Needs the ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies. Able to work collaboratively to achieve the overall goals of the school and the District.


Essential Job Functions:

Performs all functions in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the organization's needs. Current essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Provide adapted physical education instruction to meet student needs and goals as specified on the IEP. In physical fitness, gross motor skills, perceptual motor skills, and sports and games achievement.

2. Provide individualized assessment and instruction in neuromotor development, gross motor skills and abilities, physical fitness, games and sports, and other recreation and leisure activities.

3. Provide consultation and training to parents and staff regarding adapted physical education techniques.

4. Document student progress and present levels of performance by standardized, formal, curriculum-based, anecdotal, and/or teacher-made assessments.

5. Seek technical assistance and consultation as needed from colleagues, program support specialists, and the Special Education Department.

6. Other duties as assigned.


Salary Range and Benefits:

$55,000+ Medical, dental, and vision benefits are available to full and part-time employees that work a minimum of 20 hours per week.


Resources Used in Performing the Job Include (but are not limited to):

A wide variety of instructional materials and resources, including electronic/digital and adapted equipment.

Standard office equipment and software platforms such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Google Suite. Telephone, fax, copier, computer, stamp machine, badge machine, calculator.


Physical/Cognitive Requirements:

Regularly required to stand and move throughout a room and/or facility. Communicates verbally and electronically. Uses hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, and drive. Regularly required to lift or exert force of up to 25 pounds; frequently required to lift or exert force of up to 50 pounds; and occasionally required to lift or exert force of up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

May have occasion to perform heavy lifting up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and private automobile. Some evening or weekend work and travel may be required.


Environmental Conditions:

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending, and reaching may be required. The noise level is usually moderate. Exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Required to travel to other facilities within the District. Some occasional travel is required for meetings and conferences.
