Job Description

The Inventory Specialist plays a key role within the accounting team by ensuring accurate tracking, reporting, and reconciliation of all inventory-related activities. This position supports financial accuracy, operational efficiency, and compliance by maintaining precise inventory records, analyzing variances, and collaborating with cross functional teams to resolve discrepancies.

 

Environmental Health and Safety

Adhere to all local, state, OSHA, MSHA and environmental regulations as outlined in the Employee Safe Work Guidelines booklet, Safety Rules sign-off sheet and any/all information provided by the Company, steel mill, or customer.

 

Responsibilities
The Inventory Specialist will:

  • Daily and monthly review of produced and purchased inventory activities

  • Maintain monthly FIFO inventory calculations of purchased inventory.

  • Perform regular inventory reconciliations between drone observations and perpetual inventory.

  • Reconcile inventory balances between operational systems and the general ledger.

  • Investigate and resolve inventory discrepancies, variances, and adjustments.

  • Prepare inventory-related journal entries and assist with month‑end close.

  • Support cost accounting activities, including valuation, adjustments, and reporting.

  • Assist in developing and maintaining inventory accounting policies and procedures.

  • Provide detailed inventory reports to accounting leadership and operational teams.

  • Analyze inventory trends, shrinkage, and usage patterns to identify risks or inefficiencies.

  • Monitor inventory KPIs and support continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Prepare audit-ready documentation for internal and external auditors.

  • Work closely with operations, procurement, IT, and finance to ensure data accuracy.

  • Communicate inventory issues and recommend corrective actions.

  • Support process improvements that enhance accuracy, efficiency, and internal controls.

  • Perform special projects, studies and other duties as assigned by supervisor

 

Skills
The ideal candidate will have:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • Experience in inventory management, accounting, or related field.
  • Strong understanding of inventory processes, cost accounting principles, and reconciliation.
  • Proficiency in accounting principles and ERP systems, Oracle experience preferred
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills that reflect ability to analyze a broad range of issues and provide solutions
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills, with the ability to prepare compelling presentations
  • Ability to work cross functionally and reach win-win solutions
  • Experience with inventory in a manufacturing, distribution, or retail environment.
  • Familiarity with inventory valuation methods (FIFO, LIFO, weighted average).
  • Excellent computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft office products, especially Excel

  • Ability to read, write, and speak English
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal formats including individually and in group settings
  • Ability to Lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Ability to sit, stand and walk for extended periods of time
  • Valid driver’s license
