POSITION:  ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION/VIRTUAL ACADEMY ADMINISTRATOR 

FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT

SUMMARY:  

Under the general direction of the Superintendent, the Alternative Education and Virtual Academy Administrator provides leadership and oversight for the district’s alternative and virtual learning programs, including development, implementation, and coordination of instructional programs, curriculum, and staff development to ensure all students graduate prepared for success in college, career, and their communities.

The Administrator establishes program vision, oversees instructional models, and sets expectations for staff and students. Responsibilities include supervising and evaluating staff, managing operations, supporting student achievement and accountability, ensuring compliance, and fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment. This role also requires adaptive leadership to meet diverse student needs in non-traditional settings, ensure equitable access, implement flexible learning models, and build strong partnerships with families and community agencies to support recruitment, retention, and overall student success.

  • Provide strategic, adaptive leadership for alternative and virtual programs aligned with district mission, vision, and goals, including long-range planning for program needs.
  • Lead development, implementation, and continuous improvement of instructional programs, curriculum, assessment systems, and innovative learning models.
  • Use data to monitor student achievement, guide decision-making, and ensure responsive instruction that meets diverse learner needs, including special education, intervention, and credit recovery.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and support staff through coaching, feedback, professional development, and effective onboarding and staffing practices.
  • Plan, organize, and oversee daily operations, including staffing, scheduling, enrollment, program implementation, and student services.
  • Develop, monitor, and manage budgets, resources, and purchasing in collaboration with district leadership.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, including student records, reporting, and information systems.
  • Establish and maintain program policies, procedures, handbooks, and communication systems to ensure clarity, consistency, and effective operations.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment through clear expectations, behavioral systems, and student support structures.
  • Lead school improvement efforts in collaboration with staff, families, students, and district leadership.
  • Coordinate across district and building leaders to ensure alignment, consistency, and smooth student transitions between programs.
  • Oversee student recruitment, enrollment, retention, and family/community outreach efforts.
  • Maintain proactive communication and strong relationships with students, families, staff, and community stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: 

  • Master’s Degree in Education or Educational Leadership or related field and/or experience or educational training as deemed appropriate.
  • Experience with virtual learning environments, alternative education programs, or non-traditional instructional models preferred
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with five years successful teaching experience.
  • Valid Michigan School Administrator certificate or the ability to obtain per MDE guidelines.
  • Prior experience as an administrator of a school building is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting at-risk or disengaged student populations.
  • Experience with credit recovery programs, blended learning, or competency-based education models preferred.
  • Satisfactorily pass a criminal background check as defined by the State of Michigan.
  • Good work habits, including punctuality and good attendance record.
  • Skill and experience with learning management systems. Preference for experience with Google systems


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to explain and demonstrate appropriate teaching techniques.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals and professional journals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of educators, students and the general public.
  • Ability to write lesson plans, business correspondence and other related correspondence.
