    QUALIFICATIONS AND DUTIES 

    OF THE 

    BUS MECHANIC 

    POSITION: Bus Mechanic 

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    • High School Diploma 
    • Current class B CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsement 
    • Familiar with servicing vehicles as well as have a general knowledge of brake systems and diesel engines. 
    • Knowledge of school bus safety and school bus body specifications. 
    • Skill in the safe operation of a school bus 
    • Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment 
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, and school personnel. 
    • Must be able to follow oral and written directions. 
    • General knowledge of McDonald County. 
    • Be at least 21 years of age. 
    • Pass a medical examination, including vision and hearing tests, as prescribed by the Department of Revenue. 
    • Has successfully passed an examination for the operation of a school bus as prescribed by the Department of Revenue. 
    • Pay a permit fee 
    • Passes a driving record and criminal record check 
    • Submits a Missouri School Bus Permit Application

    SUPERVISES AND 

    EVALUATES: N/A 

    JOB GOALS: Ensure that all school buses are properly maintained, serviced, and cleaned. 

    TERMS OF 

    EMPLOYMENT: 12 months 

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES 

    1. Assist other mechanics in all phases of repair, maintenance of buses, school vehicles, and bus yard facilities.
    2. Become familiar with all the rules and regulations that pertain to the operation of school buses. 
    3. Become certified with school bus safety, brake systems, diesel engine operations, and body specifications as required by law. 
    4. Become familiar with all routes, pick-up points, and transfer points to the extent that you can operate the bus in an emergency or other circumstances. 
    5. Be ready to assume the role of a route driver, activity trip driver, and the responsibility of the head mechanic should he be absent. 
    6. Assist in cleanliness, safety, and organization of the bus yard and shop. 
    7. Be on call at all times after hours in the event of an emergency or breakdown of a school bus on a route or an activity trip. 
    8. Assist in the evaluation of the bus fleet to ensure cleanliness, safety, and maintenance of the buses. 
    9. Ensure that buses are inspected, fueled, and clean prior to activity trips. 
    10. Perform any other duty as requested by the Supervisor of Transportation. 
    11. Ensure that the chain-of �command is followed at all times. 
    12. Become familiar with the total operation of the transportation system which allows you to assist the Head Mechanic and Supervisor of Transportation in the daily and long term operations of the transportation system. 
    13. Work requires climbing, sitting, stooping, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, grasping, and repetitive motion. 
    14. Frequent walking and lifting, up to approximately 50 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment and/or parts of greater weight. 
    15. Vocal communication required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. 
    16. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. 
    17. Visual acuity is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities. 
    18. The worker is subject to environmental conditions, noise, vibration, road hazards, and atmospheric conditions. 
    19. Attending training sessions as well as bus driver meetings beyond normal hours is necessary. 
    20. Contact with students to provide an orderly and safe environment is required. 
    21. Contact with parents and administrators are required. 
    22. Occasional contact with emergency personnel may be required. 
    23. Additional Duties May be Assigned.
