Director of Special Education
Compensation & Representation:
The Director of Special Education is a non-represented administrator and is compensated according to the
Non-Represented Administrator Salary Schedule.
Essential Job Functions:
This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed
while in other cases related duties may also be assigned. Reasonable accommodations are made to enable

● Works as a member of a team with the Executive Director of Special Services to promote the vision of
Sumner-Bonney Lake School District and Special Services
● Works with building principals and staff to improve and implement appropriate instructional programs,
both at the secondary and elementary level
● Develops and promotes instructional improvement for special services certificated and classified staff
● Assists with the development and implementation of compliance maintenance for preschool through
secondary programs
● Assists with assignment, supervision and evaluation of designated staff
● Supervises and coordinates student placement in consultation with Special Services Directors, building
principals, parents and staff
● Provides information and consultation for parents of students in the district’s special services programs
● Provides legal interpretations regarding state and federal regulations for students with disabilities
● Assists in the preparation of local, state and federal reporting
● Coordinates transitions program including development and evaluation
● Coordinates out-of-district student placements, contractual agreements, and agency-related services
● Coordinates Extended School Year program
● Completes other tasks as assigned by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents and/or Executive
Director Special Services
● Participates in staff and department meetings
● Works collaboratively within the professional learning community of the school and district
● Reports to work with regular and reliable attendance and punctuality
● Upholds board policy, district and building policies and goals
Minimum Qualifications:
● Masters degree in special education or related field
● Valid Washington Teaching Certificate and/or ESA certificate
● Administrative credentials or a successful related experience in administration may be considered
Preferred Qualifications:
● Experience as an administrator in special education or related areas
● Strong preference for multiple endorsements
● Training and experience in de-escalation methods

● Training in Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), and/or Guided Language Acquisition
Design (GLAD)
● Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic and language diversity
● Experience in professional learning communities model
● Experience in Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS)
● Experience or training with multiple learning programs (i.e. Multilingual Learners, Special Education,
Highly Capable, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
● Ability to work successfully and positively with parents, public and private agencies and staff
● Ability to provide leadership in the development and implementation of program goals, objectives and
activities
● Ability to assist in the selection of program staff
● Ability to communicate clearly, logically and effectively in both oral and written requirements
● Ability to be a creative problem solver and to implement decisions
● Ability to use technology in data collection for local, state and federal compliance requirements
● Knowledge and skill as a special programs instructor, teacher and/or support staff
● Knowledge of instructional strategies, models and information to include, but not be limited to:
performance based education, direct instruction, interdisciplinary instruction, effective schools,
curriculum materials, behavioral assessments, secondary transition, professional development, and
coaching
● Skills in teaming, group processing and consensus building
● Ability to learn new procedures quickly, flexibly and adaptably
● Ability to excel in a collaborative team
● Exhibits multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the capability to communicate
effectively with all cultural groups in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District
● Must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations
Alternatives to the above requirements and desirable qualifications may be made as the District finds appropriate

Working Conditions:
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Reports issues regarding the safety and cleanliness of the worksite and requests necessary repairs due to
vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
Occasional exposure to weather. Moderate physical demand, occasionally required to lift and carry objects
weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds and push/pull with up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force. Must be able to
walk up to 500 feet at a time and climb stairs as needed.
The District operates on a fiscal year from September 1st through August 31st. Those employees who do not
work the full year are paid over a 12-month period. This means that during the school year the monthly pay
warrants will be approximately 1/12 of the school year earnings, which allows the employee to receive a pay
warrant during the summer months.
