Position Summary:
Under general supervision, performs land surveying, construction staking, and mapping duties for City infrastructure projects. Prepares accurate drawings, maps, and technical documents using AutoCAD and Civil 3D software to support engineering, capital improvement, right-of-way, and utility projects. Works both in the office and in the field to ensure projects are completed safely, accurately, and on schedule.
Work Environment:
The position involves both office and field work. In the office, the employee works at a desk using computers, AutoCAD, and other drafting software to prepare maps, plans, and technical documents. Fieldwork includes conducting surveys, construction staking, and inspections in outdoor environments exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, dust, or wind. Employees may work near traffic, heavy machinery, and construction equipment, which can produce high noise levels requiring the use of hearing protection. Work may involve uneven terrain and other physical hazards, requiring strict adherence to safety procedures. The employee may travel between multiple job sites and frequently interact with contractors, engineers, inspectors, and the public.
Position Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct field surveys for streets, utilities, right-of-way, CIP projects, and City-owned properties.· Perform construction staking and grade verification for public works projects.· Operate survey equipment, including GPS, total stations, and data collectors.· Collect, record, and interpret field data accurately.· Prepare and update maps, plats, legal descriptions, and as-built drawings.· Draft engineering plans and exhibits using AutoCAD and Civil 3D. · Assist with boundary determinations and right-of-way research.· Coordinate with contractors, engineers, and inspectors regarding survey needs.· Maintain survey records and documentation in compliance with City standards.· Ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.· Respond to public inquiries related to survey and mapping information. Assist with inspection of public works and construction projects to verify compliance with approved plans, specifications, and survey control.
Knowledge & Skills:
Comprehensive knowledge of land surveying principles, practices, and procedures, including boundary determination, topographic surveying, construction staking, and survey control. A thorough understanding of measurement techniques and data collection methods is necessary to ensure accuracy and compliance with project specifications. Working knowledge of drafting standards and industry software, including AutoCAD and Civil 3D, for the preparation of survey maps, plats, legal descriptions, grading and drainage plans, utility layouts, right-of-way maps, and as-built drawings.Strong understanding of engineering and construction plans, specifications, grading and drainage systems, and underground utility layouts. Knowledge of right-of-way mapping, deed research, legal descriptions, title reports, and records investigation related to property boundaries and public works projects.Proficiency in operating surveying equipment, including GPS units, total stations, and electronic data collectors, to accurately gather and process field data. Solid mathematical skills applied to surveying calculations, construction layout, elevations, grades, distances, coordinate geometry, and data verification. Skill in organizing, maintaining, and documenting detailed field notes, records, and project files to ensure accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Ability To:
Ability to perform land and construction surveys accurately and efficiently in accordance with established surveying standards and project specifications.· Ability to interpret and apply engineering plans, specifications, legal descriptions, record documents, and technical data for boundary determination and construction staking.· Ability to prepare precise survey maps, plats, legal descriptions, and detailed drawings using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.· Ability to operate surveying instruments and related field equipment, including GPS units, total stations, and electronic data collectors, under varying weather and terrain conditions.· Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team while managing multiple assignments and meeting established deadlines.· Ability to communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with engineers, contractors, City staff, inspectors, and the public.· Ability to follow established safety procedures and comply with applicable local, state, and federal laws, regulations, and standards governing surveying and construction activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or GED required.
· Associate’s degree in Surveying, Engineering Technology, Drafting, or a related field preferred.· Minimum of two (2) years of experience in land surveying and AutoCAD drafting required.· Experience using GPS, total station equipment, and data collectors required.· Proficiency in AutoCAD (Civil 3D preferred).· Municipal or public works experience preferred.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Position requires a combination of office and field work.· Fieldwork involves walking, standing, bending, kneeling, and climbing over uneven or rough terrain.· Exposure to extreme heat, cold, rain, wind, dust, and other adverse weather conditions while performing outdoor survey activities.· Work performed near moving traffic, heavy equipment, and active construction sites, requiring strict adherence to established safety procedures.· Ability to lift and carry survey equipment, tools, and materials weighing up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.· Office duties require prolonged periods of sitting, operating a computer, and performing detailed drafting and technical work indoors.
