Job Description

 

Outreach Specialist for Carnegie Science’s Earth and Planets Laboratory plays a key role in advancing the institution’s mission by supporting and coordinating a wide range of educational and community engagement initiatives. This position is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of on-site and off-site outreach programs, K-12 engagement, designing the programming for classroom/school-based talks and presentations, coordinating and programming campus tours, and public engagement events in the DC area. The Outreach Specialist will also collaborate with the development and communications teams for public events, as well as work closely with the scientists on campus. The successful candidate may maintain a small research program, in collaboration with EPL staff scientists.

 

Essential Duties:

 

  • Coordinating all community outreach programs including our Neighborhood Lecture Series

  • Co-organizing and planning the annual open house, participation in science festivals, presenting talks to the public, and organising and leading tours of campus facilities. 

  • Co-managing all event-related logistics, such as coordinating correspondence with speakers, participants, scientists, and schools. 

  • Supporting the leadership team with fundraising initiatives and donor cultivation efforts, while performing other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 


 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Ph.D. strongly preferred (particularly in earth science, astronomy, planetary science, or related field).

  • Experience with K-12 related programming preferred, especially in the Washington DC area. 

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating events, programs, or outreach activities. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
