Salary Scale: $17.00 - $22.59

Position Summary

The Patient Care Technician assists the care team in providing age specific supportive, compassionate care and in ensuring a safe environment for customers and families. The Patient Care Technician receives direction and works with the care team to meet the defined goals of the customer, shift, department and organization. Communication with the health care team related to progress, concerns, questions or problems that arise are an essential element of the role. 

Unit/Department Specific

Variation of duties may result based on the assigned patient care unit(s). This may include differences in the specific clinical skills required of the patient care technician. Unit based skill lists outline expectations beyond the house wide patient care technician requirements.


Essential Functions

  • Monitors customer's experience of care and safety through observation and data collection.
  • Performs treatments, technical procedures safely as required and within the defined scope of practice.
  • Performs and assists patients and families in activities of daily living.
  • Responds to emergent and unsafe situations and reports promptly and effectively to professional staff.
  • Contributes to the development of peers and other health care providers as co-workers and students.
  • Documents patient care using the electronic health record and communicates with other caregivers regarding customers' care.
  • Listens to patient/family concerns and questions, reporting needs to professional staff.
  • Utilizes resources (i.e., time, supplies, and equipment) appropriately and for designated purposes.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of patient safety goals and clinical improvement initiatives, including the actions within job role intended to meet these goals.
  • Demonstrates and maintains proficiency for the skills, including improvement where deemed necessary, and upgrading any additional or new skills on the appropriate position skills list.

 

Responsibilities

  • Attends, participates, and completes all required in-services, mandatory meetings, and education                              
  • Meets/Maintains all licensure/certification requirements for the position
  • Meets all employee health requirements as required by OSHA, State, and Boone County Hospital policies
  • Accepts and performs ward clerk responsibilities, following orientation to the role and completion of the skills checklist, as delegated by the unit manager or designee. 
  • Accepts other duties as assigned to promote the accomplishment of organizational goals.

 

Basic Qualifications

Education

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • Successful completion of a state of Iowa administered certification exam for nursing assistants.

Experience

  • One year of nursing assistant experience preferred

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Proficiency in oral and written English sufficient to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Skill in basic computer operation 

Communication/Teamwork

  •  excellent communication and customer service skills
  •   work well within a team 

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  •  CNA certification

Frequent Requirements

  •  Low lift 0 to 20 lbs. floor to waist of various equipment, materials and supplies and when moving patients from 4 in. to 36 in.
  •  Mid-range lift 0 to 20 lbs. horizontal lift of various equipment, materials and supplies and when moving patients from 18 in. to 36 in.
  •  Mid-range lift 21 to 50 lbs. horizontal lift of various equipment, materials and supplies and when moving patients from 18 in. to 36in.
  • Reach occurring in all planes, able to alternate hand(s) at or below shoulder level to complete various work-related activities.
  • Forward bending-standing on a level, indoor surface self-selected height, repetitive forward flexion of trunk up to 60deg. required to retrieve various equipment, materials, supplies and to position oneself for various work-related duties.
  • Rotation-standing- both direction repetitive rotation of trunk and neck to perform and position oneself for various work-related duties.

Coordination- able to alternate hand(s), reach/grab and manipulate variety of objects to perform job duties with medical supplies, IV supplies, computer/accessories.

 

Occasional Requirements

  • Low lift 21-50 lbs. floor to waist of various equipment, materials and supplies and when moving patients from 4 in. to 20 in.
  • High lift 0 to 10 lbs. waist to crown of various equipment, materials and supplies and when moving patients from 18 in. to 36 in.
  • Carry with both hands 0 to 20 lbs. floor to waist lift of various equipment, materials and supplies over a distance of 20 ft. on a level indoor surface.
  • Push/pull horizontally generating up to 50 lbs. of force performing various work-related duties (ie. Moving patients, bed roll) self-selected heights.
  • Forward bending-standing on a level, indoor surface self-selected height; stooping: sustained forward flexion of trunk to retrieve various equipment, materials, and to position oneself to perform various work-related duties, sustained up to 2.5 min.
  • Squatting on a level, indoor surface repetitive full flexion of hips and knees required to perform job duties.

 

Rare Requirements

  • Reach occurring in all planes, able to alternate hand(s) above shoulder at a reach height of 73 in. to complete various work-related activities.
  • Low work preferred method on an indoor, level surface repetitive/sustained kneeling required to perform various work duties for a total duration of 60sec.


Working Conditions

Clean, well lit, heated and air-conditioned area. Exposure to unpleasant sights, smells and infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, and occasionally to radiation. Work is performed in the desk area and on the unit. Involves contact with patients. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive. Work schedule is 12 hours shifts from 6am to 6:30 pm and 6 pm to 6:30 am. Full time is 72 hours every two weeks. Overtime dependent upon the needs of the department. Holiday and weekend work required. Hours may vary depending on departmental staffing needs.

 

Vision must be correctable to view computer screens and read printed information. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

 

Hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts and other conversations. Individuals must be able to hear and distinguish alarms and bells.
