About the Department
Supervises and directs any one of five Street Department crews (right-of-way, masonry, equipment, asphalt, or drainage).
Position Duties
include the following. Other related duties may be assigned. Regular and predictable attendance & punctuality is an essential function of this position.
Directs crew: meets with General Crew Leader to receive daily assignment; reads work orders; schedules tasks; assembles and schedules equipment and materials; schedules classes; turns in one-call requests for work sites; cross-trains employees on equipment.
Supervises employees: Gives daily instructions to crew; monitors progress to ensure acceptable quality of work; monitors crew to ensure compliance with safety procedures; instructs employees in correct maintenance and operation of equipment and vehicles; completes monthly reports on vehicles and equipment; conducts weekly safety meetings.
Keeps records: keeps time and attendance records; keeps record of work assignments; keeps records of equipment, materials, and personnel use by job and by date; prepares reports as necessary; writes up work orders for vehicles and equipment.
Participates in work: takes measurements for road depth; uses a 2-way radio; drives pick-up truck; operates or drives any of the vehicles and equipment assigned to the Street Department if conditions require; provides other assistance as needed.

High school diploma or equivalent and 3 years directly related experience.
Valid class A commercial driver's license and a good driving record.

The complexity, guidelines, supervisory controls, and supervision responsibilities described below are representative of this position.
Directly supervises a crew of approximately 10 employees; participates in work of crew. Tasks involve different and unrelated steps. Employee carries out instructions in written, oral, or diagram form. Guidelines are available, but not completely applicable. Employee uses judgement to interpret and adapt guidelines. The supervisor defines objectives, priorities, and deadlines. The employee plans and carries out steps and handles problems and deviations in accordance with instructions, policies, previous training, or accepted practices. The work is evaluated for technical soundness and conformity to policy.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing prospective employees, communicating job performance expectations and safety rules to subordinate employees, training subordinates in job duties and safe operation of equipment, planning, assigning, directing and monitoring work of the crew; evaluating performance; commending or recommending corrective or disciplinary action, approving leave; addressing employee complaints and resolving problems.
