Controls Engineer 

Location: Houston, TX

Employment Type: Full time 

 

The Opportunity

The Controls Engineer serves as a senior technical expert responsible for the design, development, integration, and optimization of advanced control systems supporting mission-critical manufacturing operations and modular infrastructure. This role provides technical leadership across PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems, ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient operation of automated equipment and production processes.

As a senior contributor, this position leads complex automation initiatives, drives engineering standards, supports cross-functional teams, and mentors controls and automation personnel. The Controls Engineer plays a key role in improving system reliability, operational efficiency, and scalability across Integra Mission Critical’s manufacturing and deployment environments.

What you will do?

Advanced Controls & Automation Engineering

  • Lead the design, development, and implementation of complex control systems, including PLC, SCADA, and HMI solutions for manufacturing and mission-critical infrastructure.
  • Develop control system architectures, logic, and configurations that support reliability, redundancy, and safe operation.
  • Design, program, test, and validate PLC applications using ladder logic, structured text, or function block programming.
  • Optimize automation solutions to improve throughput, reduce downtime, and enhance overall system performance.

System Integration & Technical Leadership

  • Serve as a technical authority for controls system integration with manufacturing equipment, power systems, and enterprise platforms such as MES and data historians.
  • Lead integration efforts with mechanical, electrical, IT, and production teams to ensure seamless system interoperability.
  • Review and approve control system designs, logic, and documentation produced by other engineers or integrators.
  • Provide expert-level troubleshooting and root cause analysis for complex automation and controls issues.

Project Leadership & Execution

  • Lead controls-focused projects from concept through deployment, including scope definition, scheduling, technical coordination, and commissioning support.
  • Support budgeting, vendor coordination, and equipment selection related to automation and controls systems.
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.

Standards, Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure control systems comply with applicable safety standards, industry codes, and company policies.
  • Support development and enforcement of controls engineering standards, best practices, and documentation requirements.
  • Promote functional safety, reliability, and cybersecurity considerations within control system designs.

Documentation, Training & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain detailed system documentation including control narratives, wiring diagrams, I/O lists, network architecture, and operating procedures.
  • Provide training and technical support to manufacturing, maintenance, and operations personnel.
  • Identify opportunities to improve automation workflows, system performance, and engineering efficiency.
  • Perform other related duties as required to support mission-critical operations and business objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • Expert-level knowledge of control systems, industrial automation, and manufacturing processes.
  • Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) 
  • Advanced proficiency with PLC programming platforms (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent).
  • Strong experience with SCADA and HMI system design and implementation.
  • In-depth understanding of industrial communication protocols (Modbus, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, etc.).
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to independently manage complex technical challenges and priorities.
  • Experience leading controls projects or serving as a technical lead (required).
  • Willingness to travel up to 20% as required.
  • 8+ years of progressive controls or automation engineering experience (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related field (required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on PLC, SCADA, and HMI development in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical manufacturing, modular infrastructure, or high-reliability environments (preferred).
  • Advanced degrees or equivalent professional experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (preferred).
  • Controls or automation certifications (Rockwell, Siemens, or equivalent) preferred.
  • Project Management (PMP) certification (plus).
  • Functional Safety or cybersecurity certifications (optional)
