POSITION: HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL - School Year 2026-2027
LOCATION: To be determined
POSITION SUMMARY: Passionate, educational leader with a strong commitment to student learning and enhanced student experience. The principal serves as the instructional and operational leader of the school, ensuring high-quality teaching and the academic, social, and emotional well-being of every student. The principal leads a shared vision and equitable school culture; models professionalism and ethical leadership; and promotes rigorous curriculum, instruction, assessment, and the effective use of technology. They uphold fair student policies, ensure implementation of MTSS, and foster inclusive and supportive relationships with students, staff, families, and the community. The principal recruits, develops, supervises, and retains effective staff; provides differentiated professional learning and actionable feedback; and builds leadership capacity across the school. They manage school operations, resources, data systems, and compliance with all regulations, while collaborating with central office on key student and school matters. Through continuous learning and reflective practice, the principal drives ongoing school improvement and advances the success of every student.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent’s Leadership Team
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE: At the time of application, the candidate must hold or be eligible for:
- MSDE Administrator II or MSDE Principal endorsement (or be eligible for this endorsement by July 1, 2026).
- Five (5) years of successful teaching experience as a teacher required, high school experience preferred.
- Three (3) years of successful administrative or supervisory experience required, high school level preferred.
- Experience with multiple schools and/or levels preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: (These are pre-employment knowledge, abilities, and skills that apply to the Essential Job Functions.) At the time of employment, the candidate must have:
- Demonstrated leadership experience outside of the classroom.
- Understanding of and ability to maintain rapport with persons from diverse, cultural, ethnic, and racial groups.
- Demonstrated ability to manage effective teams and work collaboratively in groups.
- Understanding of and ability to navigate the school and district as a system’s leader.
- Demonstrated ability to utilize and promote equitable practices in all facets of education.
- Understanding of curriculum, instruction, organizational patterns, school operations, and student services.
- Understands how trauma, equity, inclusive practices and restorative practices impacts the student and teacher experience.
- Understanding of how to implement various supports to manage student behavior such as Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), Ukeru, and Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI).
- Understanding of the school improvement process in order to determine root causes, develop annual goals, classroom strategies, and measurements of success.
- Knowledge and demonstrated ability to analyze and use data, including the Student Assessment System, to make instructional and program decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve, make informed decisions and communicate effectively with all stakeholders.
- Understanding of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future, Maryland College and Career Ready Standards, Charlotte Danielson’s Framework for Teaching, Multi-tiered system of support, and strong tier 1 universal instruction and equitable and inclusive learning environments that support student success.
- Knowledge of sound instructional practice, including purposeful planning that will increase student achievement when measured in a variety of ways.
- Understanding of instructional technology, including digital curriculum and tools, and its use in the classroom.
- Demonstrated ability to manage change with staff, students, parents and community.
- Competence in staff selection, training, supervision, and evaluation.
- Understanding of how to work with teachers in the supervision process in order to improve instruction.
- Understanding of the Professional Standards for Educational Leaders.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to ensure outstanding performance as well as good morale.
- Understanding of administrative policies and procedures and negotiated agreements for Calvert County Public Schools.
- Demonstrated physical vigor necessary to work diligently on the successful completion of school assignments.
- Respond effectively under stressful circumstances.
- Possess a valid driver’s license and motor vehicle insurance.
- Demonstrated success in accomplishing tasks akin to those responsibilities listed below.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS, RESPONSIBILITIES, AND DUTIES:
- Leads the development and enactment of a shared vision, mission, and core values that promote high-quality education and the academic, social, and emotional well-being of every student.
- Demonstrates ethical, professional, and responsible leadership in all decisions, relationships, and stewardship of school resources.
- Ensures equitable and culturally responsive practices, confronting and addressing institutional biases that contribute to student marginalization, deficit thinking, and low expectations related to race, class, culture, language, gender, sexual orientation, and ability.
- Enforces student policies and addresses student misconduct in a positive, fair, and unbiased manner.
- Supports rigorous, coherent curriculum, instruction, assessment, and effective use of technology to promote each student’s academic success.
- Uses valid and developmentally appropriate assessments that meet technical standards and inform instruction.
- Cultivates an inclusive, caring, supportive, and respectful school climate that promotes student well-being, belonging, and success.
- Ensures implementation of a multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) addressing academic, behavior, and social-emotional needs of all students.

- Provides differentiated professional learning opportunities that build staff knowledge, skills, and professional practice using principles of adult learning.
- Delivers timely, actionable, research-based feedback through valid supervision and evaluation processes to improve instruction and professional practice.
- Builds teacher and administrative leadership capacity by providing opportunities for goal setting, growth, reflection, and shared instructional leadership.
- Sustains a professional culture grounded in shared goals, high expectations, ethical and equitable practice, trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Engages families and community partners in meaningful, reciprocal, productive relationships that support student learning and well-being.
- Manages school operations, resources, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws and policies in ways that support student success.
- Develops and maintains data and communication systems that provide actionable information for classroom and school improvement.
- Acts as an agent of continuous improvement, using evidence, reflection, and collaboration to enhance student outcomes and school effectiveness and engages in ongoing professional learning to strengthen personal leadership capacity and contribute expertise to others.
- Communicates and collaborates with central office leaders and departments on student discipline, placement, promotion/retention, recordkeeping, and other critical school operations.
- Attends special school or district-related events.
- Models professionalism and cultivates a collaborative, ethical, and continuously improving school culture by demonstrating reliability, meeting deadlines, engaging positively with students, staff, and families, and supporting the school system’s priorities.
OTHER JOB DUTIES: Is available to various student, teacher, and community groups for education-related and extra-curricular purposes beyond the regular workday. Performs related work as required or assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Position requires significant periods of standing and walking and is performed in a typical school environment.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve (12) month position and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience applied to the salary schedule for administrators and supervisors. All employees are encouraged to have automatic payroll deposit.
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
EFFECTIVE DATE OF POSITION: School Year 2026-2027

References must be directly related to educational experience and must include immediate supervisor.
