Job Description

Note: This position is funded through Title III, Part A — English Language Acquisition, Language Enhancement. This position is fully grant-funded Title III and is not guaranteed for continuation beyond the 2025-2026 school year.


 


Primary Purpose:


The Middle School Bilingual Teaching Assistant supports emergent bilingual students in developing academic English, content comprehension, and biliteracy across subject areas. The role emphasizes academic vocabulary, study skills, and social-emotional support for students transitioning to secondary-level academics.


 


Qualifications


Education/Certification:


High school diploma or GED


Valid Texas educational aide certificate


Must successfully pass MISD para test


48 College Hours/Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred


Fluent in English and Spanish (oral and written).


 


Special Knowledge/Skills:



  • Knowledge of second-language acquisition principles and adolescent development.

  • Ability to support academic language and literacy across content areas.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to motivate middle school learners.

  • Organizational skills to manage student materials and learning supports.

  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness.


Experience:


Experience working with adolescents preferred.


Background in supporting bilingual or ESL students highly preferred.


 


Essential Job Functions:


Academic and Instructional Support



  • Assist teachers in implementing ESL and bilingual instructional strategies aligned with TEKS and ELPS.

  • Provide small-group or one-on-one tutoring in English and Spanish for core subjects such as reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.

  • Support students with academic vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and writing organization.

  • Help students understand and complete assignments by clarifying instructions and translating materials when appropriate.

  • Prepare bilingual instructional resources and visual supports to aid content comprehension.


 


Language and Cultural Development



  • Support students in developing academic English proficiency while maintaining pride in their home language and culture.

  • Model effective communication in both English and Spanish, promoting code-switching as a learning tool.

  • Assist in implementing language acquisition strategies such as sentence frames, vocabulary scaffolds, and interactive activities.


Student Support and Engagement



  • Build strong relationships with middle school learners, promoting motivation and confidence.

  • Provide organizational and study skills support to help students navigate multiple teachers and classes.

  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, and common areas as assigned.

  • Support behavior management systems and positive interventions.


Collaboration and Communication



  • Work with ESL teachers, content-area teachers, counselors, and interventionists to address linguistic and academic needs.

  • Communicate with families in both English and Spanish to share academic and behavioral progress.

  • Participate in ongoing professional learning in adolescent language acquisition, sheltered instruction, and culturally responsive practices.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position.
