Job Description

About the Department

The intern will perform a variety of professional and technical tasks to support IT operations across multiple teams, including infrastructure, helpdesk, GIS, business applications, and administrative support functions. Work is performed under the direct supervision of an assigned IT Supervisor, Manager, or designee. Assignments are provided with specific instructions and established guidelines, and work is reviewed for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to departmental procedures. As proficiency increases, the intern may perform routine tasks with greater independence; however, all work remains subject to review. 

Assists with technology deployments, including setup and configuration of computers, mobile devices, and peripherals.

Provides basic helpdesk support by responding to service requests, documenting issues, and assisting with troubleshooting hardware or software problems.

Maintains and updates hardware and software inventory records.

Assists with data entry, validation, and updates in IT systems, databases, or GIS platforms.

May utilize ticketing systems to track, update, and resolve service requests.

Supports development and maintenance of technical documentation and standard operating procedures.

Assists IT staff with routine system maintenance and general project support activities.

Supports administrative functions, including organizing records and preparing basic reports. 

Position Duties

High school diploma or equivalent required. Some coursework, training, or demonstrated interest in Information Technology, Computer Science, GIS, or a related field preferred. 

Must be proficient in Windows 11.

Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. 

This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment checks to include criminal history, background and DMV record checks.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic knowledge of computer hardware, software, and operating systems.
Familiarity with standard office software such as Microsoft Office or similar applications.
Ability to learn technical processes, systems, and procedures quickly.
Basic problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
Ability to communicate effectively with staff at varying technical levels.
Ability to provide courteous and responsive customer service.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in completing assigned tasks.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to manage time effectively and handle multiple assignments.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to IT security policies. 

Other Qualifications

Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including computers, plotters, printers, copiers, facsimiles, etc. Must be able to lift and install computers, and the ability to move components weighing up to 55 pounds as needed. Physical demand requirements are for those of Moderately Active Work.
