Job Title: Staff Geologist (Geotechnical/Civil Engineering)

Role Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Geologist to join our Geotechnical Engineering team. In this role, you will perform field investigations, classify soil and rock samples, and support the engineering team in determining the suitability of ground conditions for various infrastructure projects. This position involves a mix of rigorous field work and technical data analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field Investigation: Lead subsurface explorations, including soil borings, rock coring, and test pit excavations.
  • Logging & Classification: Provide accurate descriptions of soil and rock samples using the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and ASTM standards.
  • Instrumentation: Install and monitor geotechnical instruments such as piezometers, inclinometers, and vibration monitors.
  • Reporting: Assist in the preparation of geotechnical reports, including boring logs, geologic cross-sections, and groundwater data summaries.
  • Construction Observation: Perform site visits to verify that subsurface conditions encountered during construction match the design assumptions.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor�s degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Earth Science.
  • Certification: Ability to obtain (or currently holding) Geologist-in-Training (GIT) status; path toward Professional Geologist (PG) licensure is highly encouraged.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in logging software (e.g., gINT or LogPlot) and basic AutoCAD.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel: Willingness to travel to project sites, sometimes for extended periods.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs).
  • Familiarity with local geology and seismic hazards.
  • Strong technical writing skills for distilling complex data into clear recommendations.
