The Opportunity
The mowing staff performs grounds maintenance to beautify assigned grounds and landscaped areas. Work assignments may also include assisting other public works crews in mowing City properties, roadway banks or grass shoulders, and other grounds maintenance facility activities, as well as unskilled labor in support of trades personnel assigned to maintain landscaped, grassed areas, and other City properties. Work is manual labor, supervised by a crew leader or supervisor, and evaluated based on work effort, completion of assigned work, and visual inspection.
Responsibilities of the Groundskeeper include:
Mow, edge, trim various grounds areas by operating small equipment.
Perform general grounds cleanup, including picking up trash and debris on grounds areas, parking lots, and other assigned areas.
Operate a variety of power-driven small equipment such as mowers, edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers, and other small equipment used in grounds maintenance work; utilize standard gardening hand tools.
Maintain grounds maintenance equipment in safe operating condition; perform minor maintenance on equipment such as changing blades, greasing, and changing oil.
Qualifications
Some experience in grounds maintenance and horticulture recommended.
Minimum age requirement is 16 years of age.
Please note:
Candidates under the age of 18, working in North Carolina, will be required to provide a Youth Employment Certificate on their first day of employment.
Youth Employees may work a maximum of 18 hours per week when school is in session or 40 hours per week when school is not in session. Hours worked can only be outside of regular school hours. A 30-minute break is required after any period of five consecutive hours of work.
The anticipated start date for this position is May 18th and will continue through August 14, 2026. The work schedule is flexible depending on school schedules and availability.
Preferred work schedule is 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch break.
Possible work schedules:
6:00 AM - 12:00 PM - 6 hours per day, 4 or 5 days per week.
Monday to Thursday schedule, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM
Special Requirements
Must have a Valid NC Drivers’ License or reliable transportation to work.
