Food Service Assistant Opportunity

What You’ll Do
This position, based at the Florida Public Safety Institute in Quincy, FL, reports to the Dining Facilities Manager and involves skilled food preparation, cooking, and service. Responsibilities include preparing a variety of meals and baked goods, maintaining kitchen equipment and sanitation standards, and serving patrons. The role also includes managing operations in the absence of the Dining Facilities Manager, and overseeing ordering, billing, and daily operations to ensure efficiency and compliance.
Day-to-day, you’ll be responsible for:
Working under the direction of the Dining Facilities Manager and Dining Service Shift Supervisor, preparing and cooking meats, vegetables, soups, gravies, and potatoes. Preparing puddings, sauces, and fillings for bakery products, as well as preparing salad items and soups.
Continuing to develop new side items for the lunch menu.
Preparing all items in a timely manner.
Preparing all items in adequate quantities.
Preparing items as directed by the Dining Facilities Manager/Shift Supervisor.
Ensuring work areas are properly stocked with required supplies and utensils for the next day’s meal.
Preparing baking pans, setting oven temperatures, monitoring cooking times, and operating ovens and grills.
Continuing to collaborate with the Shift Supervisor to ensure all needed products are available in sufficient quantities.
Safely operating ovens to properly cook food items.
Monitoring food items to prevent burns, scorching, and other damage.
Safely operating all other equipment within the dining hall.
Cleaning equipment and utensils, maintaining sanitary conditions in work and storage areas, and cleaning grills, stoves, ovens, cooking vats, and serving areas.
Ensuring all side items are prepared in sufficient quantities and in a timely manner.
Maintaining neat and sanitary work areas.
Disposing of items no longer fit for use within the dining hall.
Properly cleaning and sanitizing all cooking surfaces within the dining hall.
Properly cleaning and sanitizing all areas along serving lines and eating areas.
Serving patrons at food counters.
Working with the morning crew to ensure readiness before serving time.
Greeting customers in a friendly and appropriate manner.
Answering customer questions and addressing concerns.
Reporting customer complaints to the Shift Supervisor, Dining Facilities Manager, or Director of Hospitality.
Serving correct and adequate portions of food items to customers.
Overseeing billing for meals ordered by various state agency partners.
Ordering food from vendors to ensure all meals are prepared with necessary ingredients.
Serving as the on-site expert for the point-of-sale system, managing cash deposits, ensuring recruits’ meals are accounted for, and processing daily credit/debit card transactions.
Performing other related duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of experience in food service, including preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
