Job Description

Infopro Digital Group are recruiting for a talented and motivated Technical Author to join our team on a permanent basis at Haynes Group Limited, who sit within Infopro Digital’s Automotive division.

Infopro Digital is a B2B group specialising in information and technology. With a presence in 20 countries, the group has 4,000 employees of 79 nationalities.

Haynes Group Limited is seeking a skilled technical author to join our team in crafting the next generation of iconic automotive DIY Manuals. This role requires an individual with strong mechanical and technical skills, who can interpret automotive aftersales technical data, and can apply this knowledge to explaining DIY activities.

The candidate should have familiarity with automotive systems, whether as an advanced amateur or professional experience & curiosity in working “hands-on” with vehicles. Familiarity with the Haynes Repair Manual product is a plus and candidates should understand what is needed to make safe, repeatable and comprehensible repair and maintenance instructions for a DIYer.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for reinterpreting manufacturer content to make it suitable for an enthusiastic DIY mechanic working with limited knowledge and basic tools; to allow them to confidently tackle tasks - something Haynes has been doing for more than 60 years.  For example, tips/advice/organisational methods etc that assist someone who does not regularly (or irregularly) perform a repair or maintenance operation as part of their professional lives.

Applicants will be expected to write in a DIY style we have pioneered, with editorial supervision, after a brief onboarding period from our in-house editors.

This job will be based in either of our offices in Sparkford, Somerset or Swindon, Wiltshire.  This is a permanent full-time role.  It is anticipated that after a short period of training, the role will be three days in the office and two days homeworking.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Key DIY content roles:
  • Study the manufacturer and related content in our own internal editorial tool (XML Editor).
  • Study previous generation model manuals to adapt the content in the same way, style it was presented or expected by our customers.
  • Enrich the content with DIY tips, recommendations, warnings, tools recommended, difficulties for end consumers.
  •  Support the editorial process to enhance, critique, and collaborate with fellow content contributors to ensure the highest quality DIY advice possible including customer feedback sessions
  • Contribute to preparation of marketing and sales materials related to the specifics or unique aspects of the vehicle to help with customer communication
  • Meet content production targets
  • Customer support
  • Help create a knowledgeable customer capability operation with content to respond to specific or repeatable questions that adapt to difficult levels of skill or (fee-paying or free) service we provide
  • Review customer service responses for safety, quality, and comprehensiveness
  • Product marketing
  • Identify the key areas of the vehicle that should be highlighted in our product marketing material that will be of specific interest to the driving, lifestyle or other interests of DIYers
  • Contribute to preparation or sales demonstrations of products (on occasion)
  • Contribute to other marketing materials that promote the benefits of our product range and the benefits, stages, and experiences of DIYers
