Job Description

About the Department

The City of College Park Department of Recreation and Cultural Arts is accepting applications for the seasonal position of Summer Gymnastics Instructor at Hugh C. Conley to provide a safe, fun, and memorable camp experience for children.

A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park’s existing operational success. The purpose of the position is to instruct in the sport of gymnastics and other activities as needed.

Hours Per Week: Availability between 6:30 am and 6:00 pm (actual shift will vary); 40 hours/week

Position Duties

Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents. This position is responsible for teaching instructional classes and the competitive gymnastics team during the Summer Training Camp. The Gymnastics Instructor will assist and aid the Head Coach and Assistant Gymnastics Coordinator.

  • Instruct and coach gymnastics classes and the competitive team.
  • Being able to arrive before the scheduled teaching time to set up for classes. 
  • Moving and setting up equipment.
  • Spotting (lifting participants).
  • Dismiss all participants to an adult
  • Responsible for class discipline protocol.
  • Document and report all injuries for participants.
  • Follow class lesson plans and team schedules.
  • Evaluate participants in the class program and inform Assistant Gymnastics    Coordinator of advanced participants.
  • Attend any required training.
  • Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • The ability to travel to and from the competitive meets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of principles, techniques, and methods of maintaining and using gymnastics apparatus.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Must be able to use tact and courtesy in dealing with the public.
  • Must be able to analyze and evaluate procedures and work processes and exercise appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and work methods.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and deal effectively and courteously with others, to work independently and in team settings.
  • Must be able to type or use a personal computer with word processing and related software and to enter and retrieve information with reasonable speed and accuracy. 
  • Moderate physical activity. Requires handling objects of average weight up to fifty (50) pounds, standing, sitting, and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Other Qualifications

  • A High School diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Age minimum 16 years.
  • Previous gymnastics experience, as well as coaching or instructional experience, is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
  • Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
  • Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
