Your role at St John of God Bunbury Hospital

St John of God Bunbury Hospital is seeking caring and reliable Patient Care Assistants to join our Casual Pool. In this hands‑on role, you will support the delivery of high‑quality, patient‑centred care by assisting with patient care activities, patient transport, and providing essential support to the nursing care team as required.

The Position

  • All direct patient care is carried out under the direction and supervision of Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses.

  • Transfer patients using all forms of patient transport to all areas of the Hospital.

  • All duties are carried out in accordance with the duty list.

  • Perform manual handling of patients under supervision of Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses.

  • Assist Nursing Caregivers with the care of patients.

  • Ensure privacy of patients is maintained.

  • Understand role in an emergency and follow direction of the Coordinator.

  • Maintain safe environment for patient contributing to patient comfort needs.

  • Contribute to an efficient and timely patient admission, transfer and discharge process.

  • Assist Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurses in care of deceased patients.

  • Provide focused supervision of a particular patient(s) as directed by Registered/Enrolled Nurse to eliminate risk to particular patient(s) e.g. provide companion support.

  • Maintain stock levels as required.

  • Maintain oxygen and suction levels in designated areas as needed.

  • Ensure that all food is handled and stored according to the Health (Food Hygiene) Regulations 1993.

  • Liaise with nursing caregivers to ensure patients receive appropriate diet/meals. Assist with patient feeding as directed by Registered Nurse/Midwife/Enrolled Nurse.

  • Assist patients with completion of menu selection excluding patients receiving special diets.

  • All other reasonable duties as directed by the relevant Manager/Supervisor

Applicants will hold a Certificate III in Health Service Assistant (Client/Patient Services) or a similar qualification, or have significant relevant work experience that demonstrates the required competencies and duties of the role. Candidates who are currently studying a health‑related qualification at tertiary level are also encouraged to apply. You will demonstrate well‑developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision, identify priorities, and contribute positively within a team environment.

You will have knowledge of manual handling practices and an understanding of basic cleanliness, food handling, and hygiene standards to support safe patient care. A strong commitment to Quality Improvement, along with an awareness of Occupational Safety & Health and Equal Employment Opportunity legislation, is essential.
