We have an exciting opportunity for an Instrumentation and Controls (“I&C”) Engineer as part of the Engineering and Projects team within the General Atomics Energy Group. This position, the engineering staff in hardware and software design and software development of industrial process automation and control systems. The ideal candidate will be able assist in defining architecture, hardware, and software requirements, develop software design specifications, specify I&C related hardware, program PLC, DCS, and PC based automation and control applications, and provide control system startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting services for new and existing control systems.
Assignments are normally accompanied by general instructions and suggestions, outlining possible approaches, sources or information, and potential problems to be encountered with work reviewed regularly for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy. Tasks involve the exercise of independent judgment and discretion about matters of significance. Documents findings and implemented solutions and communicates results to engineering staff. Contacts are primarily internal but there may be contact with inter-organization or customer contact on routine matters. May provide direction to design or technician staff.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop project documentation (specifications, architecture diagrams, test plans, signal lists, Bill Of Materials (“BOM”), hardware layout diagrams, wiring diagrams, etc.)
- Plan, develop, modify, test, and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controller (“PLC”) and Human Machine Interface (“HMI”) applications as required
- Interpret drawings, specifications, electrical design, network design, PLC & HMI development and electrical troubleshooting
- Assist in evaluating I&C designs to ensure system-level requirements are met.
- Participate with team of project engineers to develop projects as needed
- Effectively participate in the communication of technical solutions for control systems
- Documents findings, communicate results to engineering staff, management and customer through technical presentations and reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
- Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and two or more years of engineering experience.
- Must have a general understanding of engineering concepts, principles, and theory with technical experience demonstrating the application of those concepts while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.
- Strong understanding of computer science concepts, principles, and theory is desirable.
- Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately in an evolving environment and organize work assignments to meet established timetables.
- Some experience with a controller of some sort and a programming language is highly desirable.
- An understanding of PLC and HMI application development along with IEC 61131 adherent controllers and programming environments is desirable.
- Experience with C, C++ and/or Python programming is desirable.
- Experience with LabVIEW is desirable
- Experience with CAD packages is desirable. Experience with SolidWorks, SolidWorks Electrical, or another electrical drafting/CAD package is a plus.
- A good understanding of electrical control panels, and the NFPA, NEC, and UL 508 standards is desirable
- Knowledge of Field Programmable Gate Array (“FPGA”) design and programming is desirable.
- Experience with controllers and Proportional Integral Derivative (“PID”) control loops is a plus.
- Knowledge of and experience with serial communication is desirable.
- Knowledge of and experience with computer networks, Ethernet, and TCP/IP is desirable
