    Position Summary

    We are seeking a dynamic and reflective Middle School Social Studies Teacher who is passionate about helping students understand the world, their place in it, and their power to shape it. The ideal candidate is committed to strong instruction, culturally responsive teaching, and fostering critical thinking, dialogue, and civic responsibility in the classroom.


    Key Responsibilities

    Instruction & Curriculum

    • Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned social studies instruction for middle school students
    • Implement lessons aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) for Social Studies
    • Foster inquiry-based learning through primary and secondary source analysis, discussion, writing, and projects
    • Integrate themes of civics, history, geography, economics, and global studies
    • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including English language learners and students with IEPs

    Assessment & Data

    • Design and administer formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress
    • Use student data to inform instruction, intervention, and enrichment
    • Provide timely, meaningful feedback to students and families

    Classroom Culture & Student Support

    • Create a respectful, inclusive, and structured classroom environment
    • Build strong relationships with students and families
    • Support students' social-emotional growth and civic identity
    • Uphold school-wide expectations for behavior, engagement, and professionalism

    Professional Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with grade-level and content teams
    • Participate in professional development, team meetings, and school events
    • Communicate regularly and professionally with families and colleagues
    • Support the mission, vision, and values of JCJCS

    Qualifications

    Required

    • Bachelor's degree (required)
    • New Jersey teaching certification in Social Studies (or eligibility for certification)
    • Experience teaching middle school or upper elementary preferred
    • Strong classroom management and instructional skills
    • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive teaching

    Preferred

    • Master's degree in education or related field
    • Experience with inquiry-based, project-based, or globally focused curricula
    • Experience working in urban or diverse school settings
    • Comfort integrating writing, discussion, and critical thinking into social studies instruction
    • Believes social studies is essential to student voice, identity, and civic agency
    • Values both academic rigor and strong relationships
    • Is reflective, collaborative, and growth-oriented
    • Brings curiosity, clarity, and care to their teaching practice
