Job Summary: The primary responsibility of a StarGuard Instructor is the certification of all aquatic staff employed by SwimSafe. The secondary responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing audit, assisting in in-services and providing any additional training to staff as directed by the Aquatic Safety Director.
Minimum Requirements:
- Must be at least 19 years of age
- Must be a high school graduate
- Current, valid lifeguard certification
- Complete the most current version of the StarGuard Instructor Self Study Course
Experience managing or supervising lifeguards (clinical competence) Knowledge:
Demonstrate a strong, cognitive grasp of the subject matter Proficiently demonstrate all skills taught in the StarGuard program
Ability to:
- Train and evaluate SwimSafe staff
- Maintain effective and positive relations with public, supervisors, and staff
- Provide leadership and motivate staff/participants
- Maintain records and periodic reports
- Accept constructive criticism and direction from the Aquatic Safety Director
- Respond appropriately to feedback from class participants and staff
- Effectively deal with stressful and emergency situations, including fire and police
- Successfully complete all training provided by SwimSafe
- Create an action plan with the Aquatic Safety Director for managers regarding, but not limited to, directing staff in compliance of company policies and rule enforcement, enforcing water safety standards and regulations and general supervision of staff
- Independently make decisions
- Be a team player
- Maintain a flexible attitude in regards to obstacles, training locations and tools, and potentially schedules
- Accept tasks as assigned
There are five (5) levels of instructor authorization:
- 1-Star – instructor with no prior experience; authorized to co-teach StarGuard courses with a 2-Star
- 2-Star – authorized to teach StarGuard courses with or without co-instructors
- 3-Star – Instructor Trainer authorized to teach both StarGuard and StarGuard Instructor courses
- 4-Star and 5-Star – Faculty positions with Starfish Aquatics
Responsibilities:
- 1-Star Instructors
- Teach a minimum of 3 classes each calendar year Earn 2-Star rating within a year of initial certification
- 2-Star Instructors
- Teach a minimum of 3 classes each calendar year
- Conduct a minimum of 3 pool visits and 15 LG audits per month during the summer
