The Nurse Manager functions as the leader for a specified geographic nursing unit(s)/service(s), the patient population(s) and assigned staff. S/he assumes 24 hour responsibility and accountability for all patient care activities, unit operation and staff function. S/he ensures that quality nursing/patient care is delivered to all patients on his/her unit/service in

accordance with established hospital standards, nursing division/unit structure, process and outcome standards, regulatory and accreditation requirements and the philosophy, goals and objectives, and mission of the hospital and nursing division.

Job Requirements

Minimum Education Requirement :

Graduate from a School of Nursing. BSN in nursing preferred.  Evidence of continued professional growth.

Minimum Experience Requirement :

Five years experience in the clinical area relevant to unit/service patient population, including proven experience/expertise in management area. Possesses a thorough knowledge of nursing principles. Demonstrates ability to provide quality patient care. Possesses ability to assess patient’s needs, e.g. clinical, teaching, mental and spiritual. Must have good hearing and vision

abilities. Must recognize safety issues to self and others and be able to assess and implement use of lifts or other personnel to lift and move patients of all sizes and weights in a safe manner throughout the entire shift. Must be free of any ambulatory impairment that would restrict ability to navigate stairways and corridors at speedy rate for emergencies. Must be able to function well in stressful situations and have good, creative, problem-solving skills. Strong leadership skills with the ability to prioritize and delegate. Demonstrated commitment to quality, timely, and cost-effective patient care. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills required. Detail attentiveness required. Ability to simultaneously handle multiple assignments and projects with speed and accuracy. Able to work efficiently and effectively under time constraints. Proficient in the use of a personal computer including word processing. Ability to independently take initiative and exercise good judgment in decision- making. Professional maturity that daily sets the tone in carrying out the responsibilities of the position. High degree of honesty, integrity and confidentiality. Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to undertake new responsibilities as assigned. Ability to work under stress.

Minimum License Requirement :

Current NYS RN license. Current BLS certification required. CNOR preferred.

Physical Requirement/Working Conditions :

May have irregular hours and long periods of standing. Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens and other communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, pharmaceuticals/medicinal preparations, sharps and other conditions common to a hospital environment. May be exposed to infectious specimens (e.g. blood, body fluids and/or tissues), diseases, soiled laundry, lifting and handling of heavy patients, but potential for personal harm or injury to self or others is limited when proper safety and health precautions are followed. Able to pass employee physical prior to orientation. Able to maintain emotional stability. Must be in good physical condition to meet the demands of an active position, including extensive walking, moderate sitting, standing and lifting. Physically able to perform CPR. Works on nursing unit which is clean, well lighted and with appropriate temperature controls. Must be able to utilize various medical equipment in nursing dept. Performs exposure prone/invasive procedures. May be exposed to latex. Must recognize safety issues to self and others and be able to assess and implement use of lifts or other personnel to lift and move patients of all sizes and weights in a safe manner throughout the entire shift. Concentration needed to assimilate information given from many sources at once.
