MATHEMATICS TEACHER 2026-2027 FULL-TIME CERTIFIED POSITION
10-MONTH POSITION (200 DAYS) Starting August 13, 2026 + 2-Day Orientation on August 11 & 12
Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies is a regional magnet program for gifted high school students seeking a full-time mathematics teacher starting with the 2026-2027 school year. Teachers at MLWGS plan, organize, and implement appropriate instruction for a gifted program that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential. Candidates must demonstrate expertise and knowledge in both content and contemporary instructional practices in the math classroom.
QUALIFICATIONS
A bachelor’s degree in mathematics is required; an advanced degree in mathematics is preferred.
Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in mathematics is required.
Thorough knowledge of high school and university-level mathematics curricula and pedagogy is required.
Experience teaching dual enrollment and AP Calculus (AB and/or BC), as well as dual enrollment or AP Statistics, is preferred.
Virginia endorsement in gifted education is preferred. The selected candidate will be expected to obtain or complete the gifted endorsement within four years of hiring.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Effectively organize and teach courses in high school and university-level mathematics in accordance with established curricula, including multiple levels of calculus, university linear algebra, mathematical reasoning, and statistics.
Evaluate and report student performance and progress.
Maintain current course syllabi and provide a course webpage for each course taught.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Plans and implements a program of instruction that adheres to the school philosophy, goals, and objectives as outlined in the course catalog.
· Develops purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that incorporate effective teaching strategies and maximize time on task.
· Plans and implements a program of study designed to meet the individual needs of students.
· Creates a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.
· Encourages student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.
· Provides progress and interim reports as required.
· Prepares a substitute folder containing appropriate information as required by the Executive Director and/or his/her designee.
· Recognizes learning problems and makes referrals as appropriate.
· Demonstrates a strong grasp of the subject matter.
· Uses effective oral and written communication.
· Becomes acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.
CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
· Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school’s curriculum.
· Assists in the ongoing curriculum process, including the revision of written courses of study.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
· Develops, in accordance with school guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.
· Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
· If applicable, submits requisitions for the Executive Director’s approval for purchases of materials and equipment to support the program.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
· Upholds and enforces regional school board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them to the public.
· Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.
· Strives to communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public in word and deed.
· Works cooperatively with parents to strengthen the education program for their children.
· Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
· Continues professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
· Encourages membership in appropriate professional organizations.
· Cooperates with the administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs at the school.
· Attends staff, department, and committee meetings as required.
STUDENT EVALUATION
· Evaluates the accomplishments of students regularly using multiple assessment methods such as teacher-made tests, samples of student work, mastery skills checklists, and criterion-referenced tests.
· Makes appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as required by the Executive Director and/or their designee.
· Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers, following accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws.
GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a classroom setting; exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally. Occasional stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion. Frequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and grasping. Constant talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work.
