About the Department

Position Objective:  The role of the Planning Intern is to work closely with the public on a regular basis to provide customer service on planning issues.

Position Duties

Essential Functions:

  • Reviews building permits and zoning permit applications to assure compliance with zoning ordinance requirements.
  • Prepares narrative staff reports and recommendations of limited complexity, such as conditional use permits.
  • Provides technical assistance and information to staff and the public in the administration of specific planning program areas or ordinances.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Maintain compliance with all County policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Associate’s degree or one year of progressively responsible experience.
  • Experience in planning, geographical information systems, geography, surveying, or other related fields is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state and local standards.
  • This position frequently remains stationary for long periods of time and needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copy machine and printer.
  • Must be able to move up to 20 pounds unassisted, and move 40 pounds with assistance.

Other Qualifications

Working Environment:

  • Work is performed mostly indoors in an office where noise and interruptions often occur.
  • Occasional outdoor work will be required where the employee is exposed to weather conditions.
  • Overtime hours may be required to meet project deadlines.
  • Some travel may be required for training and meetings.
  • Safe use of mobile devices in the field is required.
  • Occasionally work in hazardous locations.
