    Substitute Teacher Job Description

     

    Job Title: Substitute Teacher                                                 Exemption Status: Exempt from Overtime

     

    Reports to: Campus Principal or Designee                           Pay Grade: See Substitute Daily Rate Tables

     

           Dept./School:       Campus Assigned                                          Date Revised: January 2017

     

    Summary: Supervise the daily activities of assigned students and perform the classroom duties of the regular teacher/aide as appropriate.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    Education/Certification:

     
    • High School diploma or GED (preferred)

    • Bachelor’s degree and appropriate certification, preferred, for long-term assignments.

    • Highly Qualified/Highly Effective required if position requires HQ/HE personnel.

     

    Special Knowledge/Skills:

     
    • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior.

    • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

    • Ability to be patient, flexible, and versatile.

    • Basic technology competencies.

    • Model good moral standards.

     

    Experience:

     
    • Experience working with children and young adults preferred.

     

    Basic Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Reports to the principal or campus designee upon arrival at least 10 minutes before the official school opening.

    • Implements the lesson plans that are left by the teacher.

    • Assumes responsibility for overseeing student behavior in class and during duty time/recess periods.

    • Manages student behavior in accordance with Natalia ISD Employee Handbook, and campus expectations.

    • Takes all necessary reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.

    • Complete and turn in a Substitute Checklist and Substitute Report Form  to the campus principal or campus designee at the end of the teaching day concerning problems, instructions to the returning teacher, etc.

    • Performs all extra duties as required by campus principal or campus designee.

    • Utilize effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

    • Establish and maintain professional communications with students, and district personnel; ensure that all interactions are supportive, courteous, and respectful.

    • Comply with all policies, operating procedures, legal requirements, and verbal and written directives.

    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

     
    • Supervise students.

     

    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

     
    • Maintain emotional control under stress.

    • Frequent standing, stooping, binding, pulling, and pushing.

    • Frequent moving of small stack of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.

     

    Equipment Used:

     
    • Copier, classroom computer, iPad, and audiovisual equipment.

    • Some special program placements may require equipment use specific to a student’s needs.
