Job Summary:

Morton Salt’s Silver Springs, NY location has an immediate opening for a Controls Technician. The right individual will serve as a process technician and technical support for production and maintenance departments utilizing technical expertise to ensure process efficiency and product quality.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe working environment. Understand and follow company policies and procedures in support of the Zero-Harm Safety Goal. Be proactive with safety, including anticipating unsafe behaviors, conditions, and unusual circumstances. Promptly addressing safety concerns raised by employees, and leading by example
  • Serve as a technical resource for the Silver Springs facility. Advise, consult, and facilitate activities with operators, engineers, managers, electricians, outside contractors, manufacturing representatives or other outside consultants on maintenance problems and projects. This includes identifying the hardware and software needed to provide solutions to problems.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and train users on facility PLCs, robot controls, automated equipment, and automation systems.
  • Maintain, calibrate, and train users on facility instrumentation, controllers, and alarm enunciators.
  • Assist in the customization and adaptation of existing programs to meet users' requirements, including databases, spreadsheets, PLC software, and automation software.
  • Deliver quality products and services to all internal and external customers.
  • Accountable for compliance with all Quality Control requirements including the Food Safety Plan (FSP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) program. Is familiar with the plants’ FSP program and how it applies to his/her job. Maintains records as required.  Is trained and reviews/understands the plant's Food Defense Program (FDP), operational prerequisite program (OPRP). Understands the importance of the FSP program as it pertains to the quality, legality and safety of products. Is instrumental in the documentation of equipment repair/inspection and isolation of downstream equipment to minimize contamination. Oversee planning and implementation of projects as requested.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiar with the electrical and mechanical interrelationships of automated machine components.
  • Familiar with intricate high-speed packaging/conveying/palletizing machinery.
  • Experienced in instrumentation maintenance, calibration, and operation.
  • Familiar with industrial power systems up to 480V ac, motor controls and variable frequency drive programming
  • Experienced with PLC’s and troubleshooting PLC controlled systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, self-motivated, hands-on individual with strong team and analytical skills required to establish and maintain professional trust relationships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Conflict resolution skills.
  • Trained and well-versed in project and time management.

Qualifications:

  • Associates degree or similar course completion in mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation technology related degree or equivalent experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Three years related industrial controls experience.
  • One to three years of experience with theory/ field practice of analog and digital instrument control.

Physical Requirements:

  • Normal working schedule – flexible hours, weekend and overtime may be required.
  • Responds to urgent or emergency situations outside of normal working hours, as needed.
  • Works in seated or standing positions for prolonged periods of time.
  • May perform sustained manual activities at moderate levels of exertion including lifting and moving loads of up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders/stairs and working on elevated platforms.
  • Works and travels throughout surface plant environment of varied temperatures and humidity.
  • Must be capable of wearing all required PPE and must be physically able to access all plant work areas.
  • Uses full range of motion.
  • Works in general office and manufacturing plant environment.

Salary starts at $75,000 and up based on experience.
