Job Description

About the Department

This position works in the repair and construction of underground utilities, appurtenances and utility projects while having an effective relationship with the public. Work is performed under general supervision.

This position is non-exempt. Fair Labor Standards Act overtime provisions will apply.

Per Florida Statute 295.065, certain servicemembers and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such servicemembers and veterans, receive preference and priority, and that certain servicemembers may be eligible to receive waivers for postsecondary educational requirements, in employment by the state and its political subdivisions and are encouraged to apply for the positions being filled.

Position Duties

  • Participates in the tasks and work of construction crew engaged in the repair, rework, maintenance of the utilities and roadways utilizing hand and power tools.
  • Installs new utility lines.
  • Repair and replace utility lines and appurtenances.
  • Operates utility equipment depending on tasks assigned (backhoe, crane, flat bed, etc.).
  • Flushes fire hydrants.
  • Participates in all job functions of constructing utility storm lines and roadways while being mindful of occupational hazards as well as safety precautions of the work place.
  • Prepares written reports and keep records.
  • Communicates both verbally and in writing.
  • Operates light to heavy equipment.
  • Read construction plans.
  • Interprets and applies city codes.
  • Repairs roadways with sub-base, base and asphalt.
  • Performs masonry work.
  • May perform arborist work.
  • Will be placed on call once probation is complete.
  • Follows City Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain a good rapport with citizens and the public.
  • Performs all types of masonry work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Florida Driver's License
  • Obtain a restricted Class "A" Commercial Florida Driver's Permit within three (3) months from date of hire and Obtain a Class "A" Commercial Florida Driver's License within six (6) months from date of hire.
  • Obtain FEMA IS100 and IS700 within 6 months from date of employment.
  • Certified in Traffic Control and Safety in the work area preferred
  • Certified in Trenching and Excavation Competent Person preferred.
  • Certified in Confined Space preferred
 In some cases, an equivalent combination of higher education and experience may be considered, provided that the education and experience is in a relevant and related field.

Physical Demands

  •  Continual medium work and occasional heavy work.  Much of the work is manual.
  • Moderate lifting and carrying (45 pounds).
  • Requires frequent walking and standing; climbing, stooping, pulling, reaching, bending.
  • Good finger/hand dexterity and hand/eye coordination.
  • Good eyesight, hearing, and speech.
  • Regular driving of vehicle and operating equipment.
  • Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when required.
 Work Environment  

 Works outside in all weather conditions for long periods of time; and exposure to construction and water/wastewater site hazards, traffic, and moving machinery during daily work.
