Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

 This classification will adhere to lifeguarding, teaching swimming lessons, water fitness, and other aquatics-related classes to City residents.  

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions:

  •  Ensure compliance with all applicable codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to established safety procedures.
  • Monitor work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure the safety of employees and other individuals. 
  • Instruct swimming lessons.
  • Register program participants and take attendance.
  • Teach and demonstrate various skills such as floating, kicking, stroke techniques, and water safety.
  • Answer the phone as needed.
  • Keep lounge area clean.
  • Test participants and make recommendations for future classes and skill development.
  • Monitor the safety of participants during classes.
  • Instruct water exercise classes, including aerobics.
  • Prepare lesson plans and fitness routines.
  • Register program participants and take attendance.
  • Teach and demonstrate a variety of exercises.
  • Monitor the safety of participants during classes. 
  • Observe and oversee the activities of swimmers.
  • Scan the water, enforce pool rules, and maintain discipline at the facility.
  • Take preventive safety actions and perform/ complete safety checks.
  • Rescue distressed swimmers.
  • Provide emergency first aid and CPR.
  • Perform other emergency life-saving services as needed. 
  • Conduct customer service functions.
  • Provide information to individuals regarding pool policies, procedures, programs, fees, and other issues.
  • Respond to questions/complaints and initiate problem resolution. 
  • Maintain swimming pool and facility.
  • Monitor and record pool chemical levels.
  • Monitor the temperature of the pool water.
  • Vacuum and skim the pool.
  • Clean deck areas, restrooms, locker rooms, and pool furniture.
  • Stock paper goods and maintain related documentation. 
  • Maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies and procedures.
  • Maintain awareness of new methods, equipment, and trends in the profession.
  • Participate in continuing education and in-service activities.
  • Attend meetings, in-service, and training sessions as appropriate. 
  • Process a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes, and per established procedures.
  • Receive, review, complete, process, forward, or retain various documentation, including service reports, chemical testing logs, class rosters, and incident reports.
  • Prepare or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, and other documentation, including chemical testing logs, flyers, and incident reports.
  • Compile data for further processing or for use in the preparation of department reports.
  • Maintain computerized and/or hardcopy records. 
  • Assist with swim team,  summer camps, other fitness classes, and special events as needed.

 
 MINIMUM EDUCATION AND TRAINING

  • GED or high school diploma. 
  • One (1) year of experience in lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons or water fitness is required.
  • CPR, First-Aid, and AED usage. 
  • Lifeguard training.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS REQUIRED

 Physical Requirements:

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as medium physical effort in sedentary to heavy work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of medium-heavy weight (50-100 pounds).  Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate visual cues or signals.  Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. 

Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. 

Must be able to retrieve a 10-lb object from a minimum depth of 12 feet of water.
