JOB TITLE: MTB Team Coach 

DIVISION: Solitude Ski & Ride School 

REPORTS TO: Teams Manager 

LOCATION: Solitude Ski & Ride School 

CLASSIFICATION:  Part-Time/ Seasonal/ Hourly 

Pay Range: $20 - $35   

POSITION: 

The MTB Team Coach is responsible for developing athletes' technical bike skills as well as supporting their social and emotional growth in a team setting. Additionally, they will instill the values and behaviors that will contribute to future success in life. In this role coaches will predominantly work with kids ages 8 to 14 in the disciplines of enduro, downhill, and freeride. The right candidates will display an enthusiastic and professional manner, assist the athletes and parents to establish seasonal goals and a strategy to attain them, prioritize safety, and inspire lifelong participation in Mountain sports. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Available on all Tuesdays and Thursdays from June through Mid-August 
  • Available for staff training May 30 and May 31 
  • Strong understanding of contemporary mountain bike riding and teaching practices. 
  • Ability to ride comfortably on all green, blue, and black mountain bike trails. 
  • Ability to ride comfortably on small, medium, and large freeride features including jumps 5-15 feet, drops 1-6 feet, and a variety of technical trail features such as rock gardens, rooted sections, and off camber turns. 
  • Own a contemporary, full-suspension bike that is suitable for riding on technical, black-rated trails. 
  • Ability to diagnose and perform basic trailside maintenance on mountain bike tires, wheels, and drivetrains. 
  • PMBIA, BICP, or IMBA Level 1 or higher (or equivalent) 
  • Wilderness First Responders certification preferred  
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED Certified (or ability to obtain)
  • One season as an athlete or coach in an organized MTB team, or high school program preferred. Competition experience in XC, Enduro, or Downhill preferred 
  • At least one year of experience as an instructor or coach in an organized bike team school preferred. 
  • Familiar with current US Cycling rules, equipment requirements and judging criteria. 
  • Excellent people skills are required to effectively communicate with athletes, parents, other coaches, employees, and general public. 
  • Have high standards for safety in all work environments. 

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Conduct goal setting meetings with athletes and parents at the start of the season and periodically review throughout season. 
  • Conduct daily training for athletes as directed and scheduled by leadership. 
  • Provide feedback and coaching daily to athletes, maintain lesson plans and logs, and submit written season-end evaluations on each athlete. 
  • Travel to race events. 
  • Maintain accurate records and promptly provide receipts for travel expenses to be reimbursed.  
  • Communicate any needs to perform job exceptionally to leadership 
  • Participate in coaches’ meetings, briefings, and other professional functions as directed by the Program Manager. 
  • Assure that all facilities and equipment are properly maintained and stored. 
  • Shoot video and conduct video analysis sessions with athletes regularly. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Mountain Environment: 

  • The primary outdoor environment requires tolerance to exposures such as cold, snow, wind, rain, sun, high altitude, extreme heights, extreme terrain, lightning, etc... 
  • Strenuous physical activity requires excellent physical fitness and may include skiing in all possible variable snow conditions and hiking in challenging terrain with equipment.
