Job Description














































Performs difficult professional and intermediate administrative work assisting the principal in the coordination, supervision and management of the total school program and operation.  As part of the administrative team, the assistant principal provides leadership in numerous activities and programs; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the High School Principal. 



This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

  • Assisting the principal in developing and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with state and federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the School Board.

  • Assists in planning, supervising and evaluating the instructional program;

  • Participates in the evaluation of teachers and other employees;

  • Participates in the development of a master schedule;

  • Supervises instructional programs;

  • Assists in providing leadership and direction in school based staff development activities;

  • Assists in protecting the instructional time from interruptions and intrusions;

  • Enforces standards of discipline, health, safety and general welfare for students;

  • Conducts meetings with parents, students and teachers;

  • Monitors extracurricular activities at night and on weekends;

  • Assists in preparing a variety of reports, maintaining inventories and coordinating the distribution of materials, books and equipment;

  • Assists with the supervision of all extracurricular activities;

  • Performs a variety of administrative responsibilities as delegated by the principal;

  • Maintains facilities in a safe, orderly and attractive manner;

  • Participates in Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings;

  • Serves as acting principal in the absence of the principal;

  • Serves on division, regional and state committees as necessary;

  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES



Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the administration and supervision of all programs at the high school; strong oral and written communication skills; outstanding leadership and personal characteristics; ability to motivate other to reach their fullest potential; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, the School Board and the general public.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE



Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in educational administration and considerable teaching experience.



SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS



Possession of postgraduate professional license with an endorsement as a high school principal.
