Learn to Skate Instructor at Nelson Center


Department: Nelson Center

Position Title: Learn to Skate Instructor

Reporting Authority: Recreation Supervisor

Classification: Non-Exempt

Salary: $18.00

 

Position Summary: 

Provide professional skating instruction as scheduled, provide customer service at the Ice Arena, and assist Recreation Supervisor as needed. 

 

Specific Responsibilities:

· Provide professional skating instruction according to United States Figure Skating (USFS).

· Knowledge of Learn to Skate USA standards; provide excellent customer service to all Nelson Center Ice Arena patrons.

· Build rapport with clients; grow and maintain a clientele base; maintain confidential client records, charts, and appointment book; make follow-up calls to clients.

· Coordinate scheduled hours of service with coexisting programs.

· Work with the marketing department to promote services and special events.

· Maintain professionalism and a positive attitude with patrons and co-workers at all times.

· Adhere to building and program policies and procedures as stated in department and staff manuals; assist patrons as needed during emergencies, including providing care as needed.

· Attend all staff and specific area meetings and complete mandatory training as required.

· Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· License/Certification: Current valid USFS Instructor Membership required.

· Knowledge of USFS Learn to Skate Format.

· Knowledge of Nelson Center and Springfield Park District facilities, policies, procedures, and amenities.

· Verbal, written, and interpersonal communication.

· Effective organizational and time management skills.

· Handling difficult situations involving conflict with patrons.

· Effectively break down skills and to explain and demonstrate skills for participants’ understanding.

· Work under pressure and respond appropriately to emergency situations.

· Demonstrate leadership ability.

· Work independently and as part of team.

· Work with diverse populations and a variety of situations in an effective manner.

· Apply state and federal regulations applicable to the department, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Title IX, etc. 

· Minimum 16 years of age.

· Knowledge of rink policies, job description and duties, skating skills and techniques, and can advise customers on equipment.

· Safety conscious all the time, no exceptions. This entails being conscious of the skater’s physical, emotional and equipment safety.

· Fun/Enthusiastic; Must keep the skaters enthusiastic about lessons and keep them coming back for more.

· Reliable/Punctual; Must arrive 15 minutes before and remain 15 minutes after for all scheduled lessons, events and meetings for networking time with skaters, parents and/or staff.

· Team Player; When building any program the Instructors must be able to work together.

General Requirements:

· Must be able to read and write and have good command of the English language.

· Good oral and written communication.

· Physical capabilities – squat, bend and move as necessary for the job.

· Must be able to perform basic mathematics.

· Must possess valid Illinois Driver’s License.

· Must possess professional phone skills and work well with the public.

· Must present a neat and professional appearance.

· Responsible to follow policies and procedures outlined in Springfield Park District employee manual.
