Job Description

JOB TITLE: Instructional Coach 


 


IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal


 


GENERAL DESCRIPTION:  Under the direction of the principal and the curriculum department, the Instructional Coach, having both content and instructional expertise, will work as a colleague with classroom teachers to support student learning and teacher practice. The Instructional Coach will focus on individual and group professional learning that will expand and refine the understanding of researched-based effective instruction for teachers. The Instructional Coach will provide personalized, one-to-one teacher support based on individualized teacher goals and identified needs. 


 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 



  • Supports the mission and vision of Henry County Public Schools.

  • Serves as a liaison between the school and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction by attending monthly curriculum meetings and providing professional learning with a focus on improving student achievement.

  • Assists teachers in aligning their teaching with appropriate standards, curriculum and assessments.

  • Infuses technology into curriculum and instruction.

  • Creates positive relationships with teachers and administrators.

  • Communicates and demonstrates researched-based instructional practices that result in increased student performance.

  • Manages change productively and handle other tasks as assigned.

  • Provides individualized, classroom-based coaching to instructional staff to support them in implementing good instructional practices.

  • Serves as an instructional leader within the school.

  • Provides organized, individual and/or group learning opportunities for teachers as needed.

  • Provides support in analyzing student assessment data.

  • Assists teachers with instructional decisions based on assessment data when requested.

  • Assists teachers with specific classroom activities when requested.

  • Analyzes data and assists in development of yearly school improvement goals.

  • Provides support for classroom motivation and management strategies.

  • Assists teachers in creating materials that are in alignment with curriculum.

  • Provides curriculum support training and resources.

  • Provides assistance in researching instructional and/or curriculum issues.

  • Models and coaches instructional methods in a variety of settings (whole group and small group) and provide follow-up support.

  • Participates in collaborative instructional planning.

  • Conducts classroom visitations and provides feedback to teachers and administrators on the school’s instructional programs.

  • Provides encouragement and emotional support to teachers.

  • Manages time and schedule flexibly to maximize teacher schedules and learning.

  • Works positively toward meeting identified district and building improvement goals.

  • Assists with development of district curriculum, instruction and assessments.

  • Develops and maintains a confidential, collegial relationship with teachers.

  • Possesses an understanding of when to contact administrators regarding issues of safety/ethics.

  • Performs instructional duties as assigned by the Principal and the Director of K-12 Instruction.

  • Participates fully in professional learning opportunities for coaches, including peer observations, professional research and reading, and inquiry sessions. 

  • Performs other duties as required.


 


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


 


Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree. Eligible for or in possession of an appropriate Virginia teaching license.

Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of office equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.
