RISE Pre-Apprentice – Healthcare Pathway



Location: Boone, North Carolina | Student Program | Non-Exempt

This program is ideal for high school juniors, seniors, or adult learners interested in exploring healthcare career pathways while developing valuable professional skills in a supportive and mission-driven setting.





Application Process



Prior to completing the UNC Health Appalachian employment application, interested students must:





  • Complete the RISE program application through the official RISE portal.




  • Coordinate placement with their school or program representative.





Enrollment in the RISE Pre-Apprenticeship Program is required prior to employment consideration.





What You’ll Do as a RISE Pre-Apprentice



Pre-Apprenticeship Learning & Engagement





  • Participate in structured on-the-job learning aligned with departmental goals and healthcare standards.




  • Attend required orientations, safety training, and professional development sessions.




  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and accountability in attendance and performance.




  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA and organizational policies.




  • Work collaboratively with assigned preceptors, leaders, and team members to meet learning objectives.





Departmental Support Responsibilities





  • Assist with operational and support tasks as assigned.




  • Observe clinical workflows and interdisciplinary collaboration.




  • Support patient-centered care initiatives through non-licensed tasks as appropriate.




  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.





Certified Nursing Assistant Responsibilities (If Applicable)



If certified as a CNA, actively listed on the NC Healthcare Personnel Registry, and primary sourced:





  • Provide basic patient care, including assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs).




  • Assist with hygiene, mobility, feeding, and comfort measures.




  • Obtain and document vital signs as directed.




  • Support nursing staff in delivering safe, quality patient care.




  • Follow infection prevention and patient safety protocols at all times.







Qualifications



Required





  • Enrollment in the RISE Pre-Apprenticeship Program




  • High school junior, senior, or eligible adult learner




  • Strong communication skills and professional demeanor




  • Ability to follow directions and maintain confidentiality





Required (If Performing CNA Duties)





  • Active CNA certification/listing (primary source) on the North Carolina Healthcare Personnel Registry




  • Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association is required at time of hire







Knowledge, Skills & Abilities





  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and accountability




  • Effective communication and teamwork skills




  • Understanding of patient confidentiality and privacy standards




  • Willingness to learn and engage in structured mentorship




  • Ability to follow safety protocols and organizational policies





Physical Requirements





  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods




  • Ability to lift, assist, or reposition patients if performing CNA duties (per departmental standards)




  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks and operate standard clinical or office equipment





Work Environment





  • Work performed within UNC Health Appalachian clinical departments and care settings




  • Exposure to patient care environments requiring appropriate PPE




  • Adherence to infection control and safety standards
