Job Description

At Closets by Design, a CNC Operator (often titled as a Machine Operator or Shop Technician) is responsible for manufacturing custom home organization systems, including closets, home offices, and garage cabinetry. Unlike general metalworking roles, this position focuses heavily on woodworking and nested-base processing of sheet goods like melamine and plywood.
Core Responsibilities
  • Machine Operation: Operate CNC routers (such as the HOMAG) to cut, drill, and route panels based on specific job packets.
  • Technical Documentation: Read and interpret cut lists and CAD designs generated by software like Cabinet Vision to ensure parts are produced to the correct dimensions.
  • Quality & Accuracy: Inspect finished parts for dimensional accuracy, edge quality, and finish. You are responsible for labeling parts correctly for the next production step.
  • Maintenance: Perform routine cleaning and calibration of machinery, such as managing vacuum pumps and dust collection systems.
  • Cross-Functional Support: Rotate between various shop areas, which may include running an edgebander, table saw, or assisting with assembly and loading installers' trucks.
Key Skills & Requirements
  • Experience: Prior experience in custom woodworking or cabinet making (specifically 32mm systems) is highly preferred, though may  offer paid training for motivated beginners.
  • Physical Demands: Capability to stand for an 8-hour shift and lift materials weighing between 45 and 50 lbs regularly.
  • Technical Aptitude: Basic mathematical proficiency in algebra and geometry for adjusting machine offsets and interpreting technical drawings.
  • Detail-Oriented: Strong focus on quality to avoid material waste in a fast-paced production environment.
Work Environment & Benefits
  • Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm often with no weekend work required.
Common Benefits: Closets By Design provides health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) plans, and paid time off.
