Job Description

About the Department

 To assist the Highway Department is completing tasks/projects during the summer months.  Works under the general direction of the foreman. 
NOTE: This position works only during the summer months.

Position Duties

 

  • Operate mower tractor to cut grass
  • Patch road holes
  • Pick up litter and bury dead animals
  • Flag traffic for road crew to ensure work zone safety
  • Operate walk behind mower and/or weed whips to cut weeds
  • Drive dump truck (valid WI CDL license required)
  • Replace signs as needed
  • Operate light equipment (air hammer, shovel, brush axe, tamper, etc.)
  • Painting
  • Wash windows
  • Driving to pick up parts
  • Assist with parts inventory
  • Janitorial work
  • Safety equipment
  • Cutting and/or chipping brush

Minimum Qualifications

 Must be at least 18 years of age.  Prior Labor experience preferred.  

Other Qualifications

 Ability to follow instructions and abide by work/safety rules. 

  • Knowledge of construction industry safety and ability to utilize all Personal Protective Equipment necessary.
  • Ability to safely perform various types of flagging operations in accordance with industry guidelines.
  • Ability to install and maintain traffic control devices in accordance with industry guidelines.
  • Ability to operate assigned machinery and equipment skillfully and safely in close proximity to vehicular traffic, grade and alignment stakes, slopes, trucks, other construction equipment, laborers and utilities.
  • Ability to safely load, unload, and transport equipment to and from job sites.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when dealing with the public.
  •  Ability to take control of situations in a responsible manner.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team. Ability to comprehend, retain and apply County, State, and Federal policies and legislation, i.e. local ordinances, procedure manuals, SDS sheets, safety manuals; and warning labels.
  • Ability to comprehend maps, road plans, and general maintenance guidelines.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position and ability to work flexible hours to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays due to adverse weather conditions, construction projects, or other emergency service.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and complete records and prepare clear and detailed reports as needed. Ability to understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain prompt, predicable and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to lawfully operate designated motor vehicles at all times duties are performed.
