About the Department

The Veterans Services Driver provides safe, reliable transportation for veterans traveling to and from Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities. This position supports scheduled routes, special trips to non-local VA centers, and transportation to other medical facilities as needed. The role ensures courteous, efficient service to veterans while maintaining compliance with county policies, traffic laws, and VA procedures. Work is performed under the general direction of the Transportation Supervisor.

Position Duties

Transportation & Vehicle Operation:

  • Operate county-owned Veterans Services transportation vehicles safely and in accordance with traffic laws and departmental procedures.
  • Transport veterans to VA Medical Centers within the State of Florida and to other medical facilities as required.


Vehicle Care & Maintenance:

  • Perform routine vehicle maintenance tasks, including cleaning, servicing, and washing vehicles.
  • Monitor vehicle condition and report maintenance needs promptly.


Administrative & Support Duties:

  • Maintain accurate trip records, logs, and reports.
  • Perform general office duties in support of transportation operations.
  • Work varied hours as required to meet trip schedules and service demands including early morning and late afternoon.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


Customer Service & Professional Conduct:

  • Provide courteous, respectful assistance to veterans, including helping individuals with mobility challenges.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with veterans, staff, and the public.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires the ability to assist veterans safely entering and exiting vehicles, as well as lifting, carrying, and maneuvering wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility devices. Candidates must have adequate hearing and vision (with or without correction), manual dexterity in both hands and feet, and sufficient physical strength and mobility to perform lifting and mobility-assistance duties safely and effectively.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND WORK HAZARDS: Work involves prolonged periods of sitting while driving and frequent exposure to vehicular traffic. The position requires close interaction with individuals who may have medical conditions or illnesses. Safety equipment commonly used in this role includes CPR masks, seat belts, and fire extinguishers.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates should possess a solid foundational background that demonstrates their ability to engage with the responsibilities of the role effectively.

•  High school diploma or equivalent.
•  Honorably discharged veteran (required).
•  Valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.
•  Basic knowledge of vehicle care, traffic laws, and transportation procedures.
•  Ability to understand and follow directions and route instructions.
•  Ability to drive independently to VA Medical Facilities throughout Florida.
•  Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
•  Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook) and electronic devices such as mobile phones and security cameras.
•  Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare precise reports.
•  Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals with disabilities.
•  Basic understanding of medical considerations related to transporting veterans.
•  Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with the public and colleagues.

Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
